Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how the vagus nerve regulates our nervous system by shifting between three states: ventral vagal (safety and connection), sympathetic (fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown and freeze). When we feel safe, we engage socially and think clearly; when threatened, we mobilize to fight or flee; and when overwhelmed, we may shut down or dissociate. To regulate the nervous system and return to a state of balance, we can use breathwork, movement, grounding techniques, social connection, and vocalization, all of which help activate the ventral vagal system, fostering calm and connection.

What is self love really?
It's certainly a buzz-word and is unfortunately often used to represent scenes of calm oases or gorgeous girls flitting around in flow dresses.
It's not always flitty or flowy but it is always compassionate.

It's not self-reliance
It's not narcissism and selfishness
It's not perfection, makeup, or fancy clothes
It's not even bubble baths (although I'm tempted to debate this one because...water.and bubbles)

Self-love, on the other hand, is inextricably linked to self-esteem. our ability to see ourselves as a flawed, imperfect individuals and still hold ourselves in high regard. To knooowwwwwww deep in our bones that we are worthy of goodness, connection, health, and Connection.

It's challenging our inner critic from the voice of compassion
To love ourselves is to allow space for messy/heavy emotions, without rushing to our emotional exits, shaming or ‘shoulding’ ourselves out of what we’re feeling.
To love ourselves is to say NO to toxic relationships
Self love is saying yes to things that we enjoy
it’s also saying no to things that don’t serve us.

Is that thing you’re doing self-care or self-sabotage?

Loving ourselves doesn’t have to be a radically individualistic pursuit. It’s about letting others love us even when we feel unlovable, because their version of us is often kinder than our own.

Self-love is relational. This is the healing magic stuff of the therapeutic relationship. To really feel understood and seen and ultimately... loved. To be accepted-- not-for-profit what we DO but for who we are (a state of being).
It's the essence of what makes therapy so change-making on all levels of life.

We look forward to HEALING with you.
