Professional phase ULM MLS students recently attended the ASCLS-MS/LSCLS Bi-State Annual Meeting in Biloxi, MS where they engaged with peers and other MLS professionals in the field. Students from both cohorts competed in an exciting Student Bowl competition, testing their knowledge against other MLS programs from across Louisiana and Mississippi.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony, where several students were honored for their outstanding research papers and awarded scholarships.
🩸Makayla Westerburg won best Hematology paper.
🔬Abi Savage won best Immunology Paper AND best Clinical Chemistry paper.
🦠Vittoria Valderrama won best Medical Microbiology paper.
💸Lindsey Lee won the Joy Holm Memorial Scholarship.

🩸Did you know that every unit of blood that is donated goes through testing to ensure the blood is safe for transfusion? After the blood is determined to be of the highest quality, an MLS in a hospital or reference lab will also perform extensive testing to match blood to each patient who will receive a transfusion. This testing goes far beyond just choosing a unit with the same ABO/Rh type! The high complexity testing performed in blood banks requires a college degree and certification.

Medical Laboratory Science is hosting a campus blood drive on Tuesday 9/23 and Wednesday 9/24 from 10:00-4:00. Head over to the Hangar Ballroom A and give the gift of life to someone in our community!

Did you know that Medical Laboratory Scientists are the ones who work behind the scenes to test patient blood and prepare compatible blood products for transfusion? A lot of work goes into ensuring each product is not only a match for the patient, but safe for them to receive. This is especially important for patients who receive multiple transfusions in their lifetime. There is a lot more to compatibility than just the ABO-Rh systems! 🤯

💉 Focused, Skilled, and Ready - Building confidence and quality one draw at a time!

ULM Medical Laboratory Science Year 1 students practiced venipuncture for the first time today. Proper blood collection techniques are important for quality laboratory results. Students begin learning these skills early so they will be ready to serve the community and beyond as soon as they graduate!
