Dear families,
We are writing to inform you that an individual who visited our Monroe clinic on February 19 between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. was later confirmed to have measles. We are working closely with local public health officials and following established infection prevention protocols to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed.
At the time of the visit, the patient was not experiencing symptoms; however, measles is highly contagious even several days before the onset of symptoms. The virus spreads through the air and can remain present for up to two hours.
We will continue to follow strict infection prevention protocols across all Novant Health clinics. This includes enhanced screening at arrival, separating patients with symptoms, reinforcing airborne precautions and masking when appropriate.
While measles is present in our community, it is important to remember that vaccination provides strong protection. The MMR vaccine is safe, well studied and highly effective. After two doses, it prevents measles in 97% of people.
Your child’s risk of developing measles is very low if they are fully vaccinated with two doses of MMR. If your child is not up to date or you are unsure of their immunization status, please contact our office. We are here to review your records and schedule vaccination if needed.
Known exposures from February 19th are being contacted by the health department. If you feel you may not have been contacted but among this group, please reach out to the Union County Health Department or call our clinic directly so we can guide you.
We remain committed to providing your family safe, high-quality care. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s physician.
Sincerely,
Novant Child and Adolescent Medical Group
