Rehabilitation Specialists is proud to announce the addition of Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) to its growing lineup of advanced regeneration and non-invasive treatment options for Stress and Pain Recovery.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation is a medical treatment that uses a device to deliver electrical impulses similar to a TENS unit, barely noticeable, to the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve releases serotonin to sooth panic and restore natural balance the way your body was designed to heal. This causes a reset of the body’s nervous system, accelerating recovery. The vagus nerve, a part of the autonomic nervous system, brings the body back into the restore mode after a stress or trauma.

VNS shows broad potential due to its anti-inflammatory, neuromodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. Key recent developments (including 2025-2026 studies) include mental health, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, auto immune disorders, post-COVID fatigue, neurological conditions, insomnia, learning, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Over 440 clinical trials have been registered with high rates of reported symptom improvements (91%)

Vagus Nerve Stimulation can be used for calming anxiousness, panic relief, encouraging relaxation, relieving stress and reducing tension in the neck, shoulders, arms and legs, inducing drowsiness and encouraging sleep improvement, boosting performance and pre performance preparation (e.g. sports, public speaking), enhancing concentration, increasing Heart Rate Variability for calm under stress, and encouraging relaxation breathing patterns.

“Rehabilitation Specialists of Monroe is proud to be the only medical facility in this area to offer Vagus Nerve Stimulation, along with Shockwave and InfraRed Low Level Laser Light treatments.” Keith R. Barbour, D.O., a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine. We are committed to offering the latest evidence-based regenerative options so our patients can recover faster and return to the activities they love.”

Krista Ayres, P.T.A. of Rehabilitation Specialists of Monroe has recently completed training in and is now a Licensed Perrin Technique Practitioner.

The Perrin Technique, developed in 1989 by Dr. Raymond Perrin, DO, Phd, is a manual treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME (CFS/ME) and Fibromyalgia, based on the theory that these conditions are linked to blocked lymphatic drainage from the brain. Dr. Perrin’s theory is that different stress factors, whether physical, allergies, emotional or infections lead to an overstrain of the nervous system causing a build-up of toxins in the fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

The Perrin Technique uses specific lymphatic drainage techniques in the head, neck, back and chest to stimulate the movement of cerebrospinal fluid and help move toxins away from the brain and central nervous system, aiming to improve central nervous system function and alleviate symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and body pain. Treatment includes hands-on therapy and self-help exercises. The Perrin Technique can be used to treat Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) and Long COVID.

Osteopathic Medicine has their fair share of myths....here are some of the most common:

Myth #1: Osteopaths are the same as chiropractors
- While the manual techniques they do may appear similar, osteopaths are vastly different from chiropractors. Doctors of osteopathy require a medical degree, take a completely different approach to the body, and treat a wider range of issues.

Myth #2: Osteopathic Medicine isn't relevant to modern medicine
- There are more osteopathic doctors now than ever before, with over a quarter of all medical students in the U.S. studying to become DOs.

Myth #3: Osteopathic Manipulation is Only for Musculoskeletal Issues
- Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMT)does treat neck, back, and joint pain, but it also treats a range of medical conditions and disorders as well. Osteopathic physicians are taught to incorporate manual diagnosis into their medical exams and consider the whole body when diagnosing patients.

Myth #4: Osteopathic Medicine is an alternative medicine
- This is not accurate. Osteopathic medicine is integrated into the US healthcare system and utilized alongside allopathic (which MDs learn) medicine.

Myth #5: Osteopathic Medicine isn't evidence-based
- This is completely wrong. Osteopathic medicine has been practiced for over a hundred years and is rooted in scientific research. Want to learn more? Check out our peer-reviewed medical journal here: https://aaoj.kglmeridian.com/
