SSM Health Monroe Hospital is proud to be a Safe Haven location. This means that parents can safely leave unharmed newborns at our hospital or any of our SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group facilities while staff are present up to 72 hours old in Wisconsin and 30 days old in Illinois.

Under Wisconsin and Illinois laws, parents can leave their baby with a medical professional, police officer or 911 emergency medical staff person without fear of legal consequences. If the parent does not indicate that they will return for the child, this is called Safe Haven.

Volunteering is a sweet treat for SSM Health Monroe Hospital Cookie Crew helper Phyliss Ziegler.

Helping since 2012, Phyliss has found both friendship and purpose in supporting fundraising efforts at the Health Ministry.

“I knew that I wanted to volunteer during retirement and give back to this community,” she said. “I love to bake — Cookie Crew has been perfect for me!”

Over the years, Phyliss has enjoyed building connections with fellow volunteers and getting to know the community members who stop by each month.

“Many people have made extra donations to us in support of great causes such as hospice, medical scholarships, or purchasing baby swaddles and car seats,” she said. “It gives me a good feeling that we are helping with these things.”

Phyliss encourages others in the community to explore the many volunteer opportunities available at SSM Health in Monroe.

Thank you for sharing your time and talents, Phyliss!

Colorectal cancer is rising among younger adults — here’s what you need to know.

SSM Health family medicine physician Dr. Roopa Shah says early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have: “Screenings save lives. Even if you’re young and feel healthy, don’t ignore new or unusual symptoms.”

Read our blog to learn why cases are increasing, what symptoms to watch for, and how screening guidelines are evolving. It’s a must read for anyone looking to protect their long term health — or the health of someone they love.

What was supposed to be a routine 40 week appointment turned into a day Lindsey Hoeltke will never forget.

During her checkup, Lindsey’s care team noticed that her baby’s fetal monitoring results weren’t reassuring. With no breathing motions detected and her baby’s heart rate dropping unpredictably, Lindsay was quickly admitted for induction.

Lindsey immediately felt the urgency when it came time to deliver. Her baby’s heart rate suddenly dipped to dangerously low levels — and SSM Health Monroe caregivers acted quickly.

With expert action from Dr. Jeffrey Dinges, Lindsey delivered baby Presley Jade on the very next push.

Presley arrived with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck four times. Dr. Dinges swiftly removed it and handed the baby to Dr. Lindsay Geier, who was already prepared to support addressing oxygen levels.

Thanks to the calm, skilled, and compassionate care from the entire team — including RN Bri Schofield — Presley is now a perfectly healthy, thriving baby girl.

“I was truly amazed by the team’s expertise and professionalism. Everyone was so attentive, compassionate, and reassuring throughout the entire process,” Lindsey said. “I could not have asked for a better care team.”

Join us in celebrating the exceptional SSM Health team whose quick actions made all the difference for Lindsey and her family!

During Catholic Sisters Week, we recognize the incredible legacy of our founding congregation.

In 1872, five Sisters traveled from Germany to St. Louis to serve those in need. They formed the Sisters of St. Mary (now the Franciscan Sisters of Mary) and opened their first hospital in 1877—the beginning of what is now SSM Health.

Their dedication to caring for the community continues to guide our work today.

At any given time, hundreds of patients in Wisconsin remain in hospitals longer than medically necessary because their families lack the legal authority to approve a transfer to a post-acute facility when no medical power of attorney is in place.

Assembly Bill 598—often called the “next of kin” bill—aims to fix this barrier. The legislation would give close family members, including spouses, limited authority to make essential care decisions for incapacitated loved ones. This change would prevent families from enduring weeks or months of court delays and costly guardianship proceedings, while ensuring patients receive the appropriate care in the right setting.

The Wisconsin State Assembly passed AB598 with strong bipartisan support last month and Governor Tony Evers is committed to signing it into law. Passing this legislation will have an immediate impact on access to care in Wisconsin hospitals.

We join the Wisconsin Hospital Association in urging the Wisconsin State Senate to bring AB598 to the floor and ensure it finally passes the state legislature.
