🎂 Celebrating 102 Years 🎂
Sarah Ann Johnson Smith was born on January 29, 1924, to Claude and Sudie Johnson. She was one of seventeen children and grew up in the small rural community of Goodway, Alabama, in Monroe County. Raised on a small family farm, Sarah learned the value of hard work at an early age. She attended Goodway School through the sixth grade and spent much of her childhood helping her family, learning to cook, and taking on responsibilities well beyond her years. She was raised with the belief that hard work never hurt anyone—a lesson that guided her throughout her life.
At just sixteen years old, Sarah married Freaman Smith. Together, they built a life rooted in love, perseverance, and faith, raising nine children of their own. Through the years, her family continued to grow, blessing her with seventeen grandchildren and an abundance of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Family has always been at the heart of Sarah’s life.
Times were often challenging, but Sarah never shied away from work. She spent 35 years working on and off as a seamstress at Vanity Fair, where her dedication and strong work ethic helped provide for her family. Even through hardship, she remained determined and resilient.
Sarah lived at home for many years, maintaining her independence until she reached a time when she could no longer care for herself. She then became a resident of Monroe Manor Nursing Home, where she has now lived for seven years. Sarah often shares that she is happy at Monroe Manor and believes it is a good place to be when you are no longer able to see to yourself.
