Worldwide, Family Based Treatment, or FBT, is considered to be the Gold Standard for the early intervention treatment of Eating Disorders. It is an effective, efficient,research-supported treatment protocol for Adolescents and Emerging Adults struggling with eating disorders.
FBT can be applied to the restrictive eating disorders and for the full range of eating disorders - Anorexia, Atypical Anorexia, ARFID, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder.
Eating disorders do not Descriminate. They occur in all genders, all ethnicities, all cultures, and most imporantly - all body shapes and sizes.
At Resilience DBT & Eating Recovery, we utilize FBT to train and empower parents to recognize and intervene in the illness that has hijacked their child. FBT harnasses the love and parental intuition as expert healing agents in supporting their loved one through the recovery process.
FBT is grounded in the understanding that eating disorders are serious medical and psychiatric illnesses that require active, structured intervention. Parents are not blamed. Instead, they are supported and guided to take a leadership role in restoring nutrition, interrupting eating disorder behaviors, and creating a home environment that promotes healing.
In Phase 1, caregivers take charge of meals and weight restoration with clinical support.
In Phase 2, autonomy is gradually returned as stability and rationality improves.
In Phase 3, the focus shifts toward adolescent development and relapse prevention.
Throughout FBT treatment, we help families
• Separate the eating disorder from their child
* Reverse a process that is hijacking their child's mind.
• Reduce shame and secrecy
• Strengthen parental confidence
• Improve communication and emotional regulation
• Put in the building blocks for relapse prevention and full recovery.
FBT aligns naturally with DBT principles by balancing acceptance and change. Families learn how to offer distress tolerance skills while maintaining clear, consistent boundaries around food and safety.
Eating Disorders are progressive illnesses. If your child is showing signs of an eating disorder, early intervention matters! FBT should be considered as First-Line-of-Treatment.
