MHA is excited to share that our new 988 MCORT (Mobile Crisis Outreach Response Teams) awareness ads are officially live at Newark Penn Station! A few members of our MCORT team visited to see them in person and ensure our message is reaching commuters and community members across the city. We’re proud to be spreading awareness about these lifesaving resources.

MHA plays a critical role in the 988 services through MCORT, providing immediate support to non-life-threatening mental health, substance-related, or suicidal crises in Essex and Hudson Counties when deployed by the 988 Crisis Lifeline call centers.

On November 19th, MHA’s Board Advocacy Committee participated in a tour of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital led by Hospital CEO Josh Belsky and members of the Hospital’s senior management team.

Josh and his team graciously spent considerable time with chair Bill Olderman, CEO Bob Davison and members of the committee. They gave a comprehensive presentation and took all questions. The committee was impressed with the operations of the hospital and the openness of the staff.

While more work needs to be done, conditions at the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital have clearly improved. MHA looks forward to a continued relationship with the hospital to the benefit of the patients and their families.

In response to the increased need for food access caused by recent SNAP benefit cuts and delays, our MCORT team joined the Unified Vailsburg Services Organization and the Urban League of Essex County for their first emergency Food Hub in Newark’s West Ward.

UVSO will continue hosting Food Hubs for the next two weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at Speedway Academies (701 South Orange Ave., Newark, NJ) to ensure families have reliable access to essential resources.

MHA served as a Silver Sponsor of the YMCA Of Montclair's 1891 Gala on November 6! It was a privilege for our staff and board members to attend the evening and join together at the table with Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill.

The 1891 Gala supports the YMCA’s mission to empower young people, improve health and well-being, and create belonging across the community. At MHA, we share that mission, promoting mental health and wellness for all, and we’re proud to stand alongside organizations doing this meaningful work.

Thank you to the Montclair YMCA for bringing together such a vibrant community of supporters, and for giving us the opportunity to be part of this important evening. We look forward to future partnerships that strengthen our collective impact.

On October 28th, Annette Hoffman from MHA’s Intensive Family Support Services in Sussex County participated in a panel discussion at Sussex County Community College (Sussex County Community College) called Hearing Someone into Existence: A Cross-Curricular Conversation Inspired by “Harvey”.

In this event, Annette and Psychology professor Richard Linden discussed themes relevant to the play, Harvey, written by Mary Chase. Approximately 200 students were in attendance as students from the theater department performed a scene from Harvey which spoke to the role of stigma towards those who have mental illness and those who are, in some way, considered “different”. Following the scene, Prof. Linden and Annette spoke about how to help someone who might be struggling with a mental health condition and discussed community resources that are available to help.

The presenters also discussed how to navigate the chaos and division in the current moment in our history and ways for students to find coping strategies that work best for them. Students were encouraged to understand that, with self-care strategies and treatment, those with mental health conditions can lead lives that are satisfying and meaningful. Students were active participants in this discussion. The session ended with a performance of a song from the musical, Dear Evan Hansen called "You Will Be Found".
