Community Human Services

Community Human Services We provide homeless, mental health & substance abuse services to Monterey County residents in need. Please visit us at www.chservices.org.

Each year, Community Human Services helps over 3000 people in Monterey County address substance abuse and mental health issues. Our programs are designed to serve low and moderate income families who are uninsured or otherwise unable to afford care. Our funding comes from Medi-Cal, government contracts, private grants and donations and client fees.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Community Human Services to you and yours. We hope today is filled with warmth, connection, and moments that remind you how deeply community matters.

This season, we’re grateful — for the people who show up, for the neighbors who care, and for the belief that everyone deserves dignity, support, and hope.

And if, in the spirit of the day, you’re feeling moved to give…
The campaign is still open through December 31. Your gift helps ensure that care continues for neighbors facing homelessness, mental-health challenges, and substance-use struggles — today and well into the new year.

On Christmas Eve, many of us are surrounded by warmth, tradition, and the people we love. But for some of our neighbors, tonight looks very different.

At Community Human Services, Christmas Eve is a reminder of why we show up — at the intersection of crisis and care. It’s where compassion meets action, and where a safe bed, a warm meal, mental-health support, or recovery services can mean everything.

If you’re able, we invite you to help extend that care tonight. A gift through MCGives helps ensure that support continues — not just during the holidays, but every day of the year.

✨ The MCGives! campaign runs through December 31. To make a donation, visit

This Hanukkah, we’re reminded that a little light can last far longer than expected. 💙
Your generosity works the same way — stretching beyond the moment to bring hope, care, and stability to our neighbors when they need it most. Thank you for being a light that lasts.

Another tale from Gabby: The only thing better than Thanksgiving at Shuman HeartHouse is Christmas at Shuman HeartHouse. Through the thick haze settled over Monterey, instead of the red nose of Rudolph, Santa was leading a parade of Monterey Police Department vehicles strung with lights, flashing as they pulled into the Shuman HeartHouse parking lot. Guests of the shelter cheered as Santa and his uniformed elves made their way into the rec room, with a heavy red bag full of presents carried over their shoulders.

After Santa took his place in his chair, he called up the children one by one to receive their wrapped gifts. Some got so many they could barely see over them as they made their way back to sit with their families. The smiles were endless and there wasn't a dry eye in sight - I had to take a number of these photos through misty eyes myself.

It's moments like these that show how much community means. I drove away with a heart that had grown three sizes that day, knowing the love and support for guests at Shuman is not just making an impact, it's making memories.

Thank you to Monterey Police Department and as always, to the Shuman Family for making such a huge difference in so many people's lives.
