We still are working to serve the families in care who are due Through August/Sept. Any donation amounts are so appreciated. Thank you everyone for all of the love. We know that our center closing is not only heartbreaking for us, but for many of you as well.

Many folks have asked how they can help the Center in this transition. Closing, like opening, is expensive. It costs about 40k per month to keep the Center open each month. Our highest priority is closing with integrity: ensuring that our families through September 1st are well cared for, providing refunds for those due past September, keeping our lights on and paying down as many debts as possible. We will continue to not take a salary in this closing; all of the money will go to the families we serve and the enormous closing costs.

At this time, the best way to support us would be to donate to our Go Fund Me (link in our stories and highlights), buying supplements from our online store or scheduling any wellness, pap smear, or lactation appointments before our doors close on September 1st. These types of appointments, whether through cash pay or insurance, will help tremendously with keeping the center running for the next few months and the costs associated with everything.

WE ARE CLOSING

It is with a heavy heart that we announce Monterey Birth & Wellness Center will be closing its doors on September 1st, 2024, almost 7 years after we opened Monterey's first and only Nationally Accredited freestanding Birth Center.

This announcement will inevitably be met with shock and confusion. When we opened in 2017, we had a vision of providing the best integrative midwifery care in an environment that supported physiologic birth and wellness. The goal of the Birth Center was to make this model of care visible and accessible to every family in Monterey County. Though we were never paid well, we knew those first few years would be spent developing relationships with the community and other providers and laying the groundwork for taking insurance, national accreditation and systems creation. The pandemic was a challenging time for us all. Unfortunately since then, we have seen the birth rate fall, the cost of utilities, medical supplies and malpractice skyrocket, without an increase in our insurance reimbursement rates. We have less cash pay families and occasionally, families have been unable to pay us at all.

Keeping MBWC open has dominated our every waking thought for the past three years. We have shifted our marketing in hopes of reaching more people, added more insurance and cost-share contracts, reduced our staff and expenses, and continued for months without a salary. Looking at our financials last month, the starkness of our inability to pay our most basic expenses revealed that closing the Birth Center was the only way forward.

Our closure will leave a hole in Monterey's healthcare system and in the hearts of the many families we have served over the past 7 years. The Birth Center was a symbol of what healthcare could be. The loss of this and the physical closure of our space is gutting.

This doesn't mean the end of our work in this community, though! Heather and Kelly will continue to offer community midwifery, lactation, well person, preconception and birth in the home setting. More info on this to come!

With the new year it is finally time we officially introduce you all to our new(ish) midwife, Madrone, who joined our team in August.

I am Madrone Mireille Cervelli, LM, CPM (they/them) a q***r, non-binary licensed midwife based out of Santa Cruz.

I am excited to join the midwife team at the Monterey Birth Center and honored to be a part of your collaborative care. Since 2003 I have attended hundreds of births in the capacity of doula, student midwife, and licensed midwife. I graduated from the National Midwifery Institute in 2019 and opened my own home birth practice, Madrone Midwifery (www.madronemidwifery.com). I pride myself in being a "middle of the road" practitioner, having supported every type of birth from high-risk hospital births to at-home water births. I bring an inclusive, accessible approach to the Birth Center Team.

I am the second of 6 children born at home so I grew up around out-of-hospital birth. I sought out midwifery care for my own three children and was inspired to become a birth worker myself. On my pathway to midwifery, I became an expert doula, a trained life coach, and have been teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga for 15 years. I believe in the power of the mind/body connection during labor and birth and am continuously humbled by the strength and resilience of birthing humans.
