So pleased that the Monterey Cypress teenager that we donated to be planted at the foot of Harry Greene’s gravesite last year not only survived the recent wicked storms, but is thriving! I’m biased, but I’d say it’s the most handsome youngster on the property. We grew this little guy from a seedling that came from the original giant Monterey Cypress on our property, planted by Harry himself! 🌲 💚

So pleased to see the baby Monterey Cypress doing so well that we collected (at 1 inch tall) and raised from under one of Harry Greene’s original trees on our property. We donated it to El Encinal Cemetery about six months ago when it finally was ready to transplant into the Greene Family plot. 🙏🏼

🌺Hellebores have a particular place in the Greene Mansion’s Victorian garden. Early flowering and tolerant of shade, their sorrowful, pendulous flower heads bring news that winter is ready for transition.

Though ancient civilizations used hellebores for medicinal purposes to treat paralysis, gout, and even insanity, many species within the hellebore family are highly toxic, giving the flower its many dark qualities that inspired witchcraft spells and other mythological tales. The most well known incident where hellebore took center stage was the assassination of Alexander the Great.

Atmospheric river and storms of March 9-10, 2023 left in absolute darkness for over 24hrs with ALL ave businesses closed due to having no power. It was a combination of utter darkness, line of cars trying to get out of the city, and ongoing sound of sirens. In addition to lack of power, many of us had no cellular service and were completely unable to text or make calls. Sending thoughts of perseverance to all residents and small business owners.
