We are so proud to be a member of . Yesterday, our Clinical Director Jennifer D’Attilio volunteered there by helping out with a presentation about doula services to new and expecting parents/families. 🗣️ Speech Sound Check: Is Your Child on Track?
Wondering if your child’s speech sounds are developing as expected?
Speech sounds typically develop gradually, but there are general ages when most children master specific sounds:
✅ By age 4: p, b, m, t, d, n, h, w
✅ By age 5–6: k, g, f, v, y, l
✅ By age 7–8: s, z, sh, ch, j, th, r
If your child is still having difficulty with certain sounds beyond these ages, it may be time to connect with a speech-language pathologist.
💡 Early support can make speech clearer and boost confidence!
📚 Based on McLeod & Crowe (2020) speech sound acquisition norms.

Did you know? Too many questions can actually make communication harder for some kids.
Instead, switch to comments. Describe, label, or share an observation. It gives kids a language model without the pressure to answer right away.
💬 Slow down. Observe. Comment. Wait.
It’s one of the easiest ways to support early language development and AAC users alike!

🕰️ The Power of WAIT TIME
One of the most effective ways to support communication?
Pause.
Seriously…just pause. ✋
Whether your child is verbal, using AAC, or learning to sign, wait time gives them space to:
✅ Think
✅ Process
✅ Plan
✅ Respond
Instead of repeating the question or jumping in, try giving at least 5 seconds of quiet, supportive stillness.
💡 That pause? That’s where language happens.

🧠💬 What’s Core Vocabulary & Why Does It Matter?
Core words like go, want, stop, and help make up the majority of what we say and they’re the foundation of powerful, flexible communication.
Whether your child is verbal or using AAC, modeling these words in daily routines (play, meals, transitions) helps build independence and confidence.
✅ Used across environments
✅ Work for a wide range of communication functions
✅ Easy to model all day long
💡The goal isn’t big sentences—it’s meaningful communication. Core vocabulary gives all communicators the tools to connect. 💙
📌 Save this post as a reminder that less is more when it comes to language learning.
