What to Expect After a Reiki Session: A Deeper Look into the Healing Response
At Monterey Reiki and Renewal, I often get asked: “Is it normal to feel emotional after Reiki?” or “Why do I feel more tired than usual?” The short answer is—yes, it’s normal, and often a sign that something profound is shifting.
Reiki works gently yet deeply, activating your body’s natural healing abilities. One of the most significant changes that takes place during and after a session is the movement from a state of fight or flight to one of rest and restore.
Let’s explore what this means—and the variety of sensations or symptoms you might experience afterward.
🧠 From Fight or Flight to Rest and Restore
In modern life, many of us live with a constantly activated sympathetic nervous system—our stress response, also known as “fight or flight.” This system floods the body with adrenaline and cortisol, preparing us to respond to real or perceived threats.
But over time, staying in this high-alert state drains the body, weakens immunity, and depletes emotional reserves.
Reiki invites the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s “rest and digest” mode—to take over. This allows deep healing to begin. You may feel a wave of peace, a slowing down of breath, or a gentle unraveling of tension. However, as the body shifts into rest mode, some stored physical and emotional patterns may rise to the surface before they fully release.
🌊 Common Post-Session Symptoms (and Why They’re Normal)
1. Fatigue or Deep Tiredness
After Reiki, many clients feel relaxed, even sleepy. This is your body’s way of conserving energy for healing. The shift out of high-alert mode can reveal how exhausted you’ve been running beneath the surface.
What to do: Honor your need to rest, try your best not to feel guilty about needing it. If possible, take it slow after your session. Drink water, avoid overstimulation, and go to bed early.
2. Emotional Release
You might cry, feel irritable, or suddenly remember past events. This can be surprising if you thought you were “over it,” but Reiki has a way of unlocking emotional blocks stored in the body.
What’s happening: Reiki energy supports emotional detox. The limbic system—the emotional part of your brain—often responds by finally processing things you’ve been carrying for too long.
What to do: Allow yourself to feel and be kind to yourself and your process. Journal, take a walk, or talk to someone you trust. Try some humming, chanting, or singing. These emotions are coming up to move through you—not to stay stuck.
3. Heightened Sensitivity
Some clients report feeling more sensitive—energetically or emotionally—for a day or two. Lights might seem brighter, conversations more intense, or your inner dialogue louder.
Why: As your energetic system clears and balances, your awareness expands. This sensitivity is part of recalibration.
What to do: Ground yourself. A simple and effective way to return to center is through intentional breathwork—try Sheetali Pranayama to cool the inner fire, or Breath of Fire to ignite inner power and build warmth. Gentle movement, time in nature, or placing your hands over your heart or belly can also help anchor your energy. If possible, go “grounding” by walking barefoot on the earth. You might even lay down in the sand at the beach or stretch out in your own backyard—let the earth hold you.
4. Digestive Changes or Headaches
Your body’s detox systems may kick in. You might notice gurgling in the stomach, increased thirst, vivid dreams, or even a mild headache.
Why: Reiki enhances energy flow, sometimes flushing out stagnant energy or toxins. Your physical body responds accordingly.
What to do: Hydrate. Herbal teas, light foods, and salt baths can help your system process smoothly. Drink as much water as you can. Reiki is very detoxifying, so the more water you are able to drink after a session, the more toxins will flush out.
🕊️ Healing Isn’t Always Linear
It’s important to understand that healing doesn't always look like bliss. Sometimes it looks like crying. Or sleeping deeply. Or questioning everything. These are not setbacks—they’re signs of unwinding. Reiki works on the root level, not just the surface, so the shifts you feel may be subtle, delayed, or emotional.
