On this day, 18 years ago, October 25, 2007, 22-year-old Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta was serving as a rifle team leader with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan.

During a multi-day combat mission known as Operation Rock Avalanche, Giunta's squad was ambushed by a large and well-armed group of insurgents setting up an L-shaped ambush.

Under intense enemy fire, Giunta charged forward into the kill zone to pull a wounded squad member back to safety despite the risk to his own life.

He then saw two insurgents carrying off another wounded comrade. Giunta engaged the enemy fighters, killing one, wounding another, and recovering the soldier.

At great personal risk, he provided medical aid under fire to the wounded soldier, who unfortunately later died.

Giunta's actions broke the enemy ambush, saved lives, and inspired his squad to regroup and succeed.

Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony on November 16, 2010.

He survived the combat and later left the United States Army in June 2011.

He is recognized as the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.
