Recently, someone mentioned they weren’t sure of the difference between PAD and PVD when making a referral. It’s a great question, and one we hear often.
🔴 Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition where the [ arteries ] become narrowed or blocked, reducing blood flow. It most commonly affects the legs and may cause pain with walking, numbness, or slow-healing wounds. PAD specifically refers to clogged arteries. PAD is actually a subset of PVD.
⚫ Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is a broader term that refers to diseases affecting both veins & arteries. This does include artery problems like PAD, as well as vein conditions and other circulation disorders. PVD is an umbrella term for any disease affecting blood vessels outside the heart - including [ veins ] & lymphatics. It often refers to conditions (like venous insufficiency) that prevents blood from moving back to the heart, typically resulting in swelling and varicose veins.
✨ Understanding the difference can help ensure patients are referred for the most appropriate vascular evaluation & care.
If you have patients or yourself is experiencing symptoms of poor circulation, our team is always here to help!

What is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?
Peripheral Artery Disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your legs and feet.
This reduces circulation and can make walking or healing more difficult.
Common symptoms may include:
• Leg pain or cramping when walking
• Numbness or weakness in the legs
• Cold legs or feet
• Slow-healing sores or wounds
• Changes in skin color or shiny skin
• Weak or absent pulses in the feet
Many people mistake these signs for normal aging or fatigue.
Early evaluation can help improve blood flow and prevent more serious complications.
If you are noticing changes in your legs or feet, a vascular check can help provide answers and peace of mind.
Call our office today if you are experiencing any of these symptoms! 📲 334-284-6500

March is Kidney Disease Awareness Month 💚
Did you know diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney disease?
High blood sugar can damage the small blood vessels in the kidneys over time, affecting their ability to filter properly. Because your kidneys rely on healthy circulation, vascular health plays a critical role in protecting kidney function.
At Montgomery Vascular, we help manage circulation, treat narrowed or blocked arteries, and support dialysis access for patients with advanced kidney disease.
Healthy blood flow matters — especially for patients living with diabetes.
