Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day — a moment to reflect, learn, and continue action.

HIV awareness has been prevalent in Black communities since the 90’s. However, our communities continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV, not because of who we are, but because stigma, silence, and unequal access to care.

Awareness is power.

Cut the stigma. Protect our community. ♥️✂️

As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, we want to take a moment to spotlight his barber. Nelson Malden.

Malden was Dr. King’s barber from 1954 until his tragic assassination in 1968. He owned and cut out of Malden Brother’s Barbershop in Montgomery, AL. His barbershop served as a meeting place for Dr. King and other civil rights leaders. ✊🏾

Behind every great man is a great barber who pushes and supports his dream. 🖤

Our barbers visited Score Health in Memphis—now open and offering STI testing, HIV testing, treatment, and prevention services.

With Memphis leading the nation in new HIV infections, community matters more than ever.

And our barbers are showing up.
Learning. Connecting. Referring. Caring.

This is what community health looks like when barbers lead with intention—inside and outside the shop. ✂️

As the year comes to a close, we reflect on the moments that have moved HIV care and prevention forward. From expanded
access and stronger partnerships to conversations that challenged stigma and centered community — each moment on this list represents progress rooted in care, science, and people.

We honor the work that’s been done and the communities that made it possible. And as we step into a new year, we remain
committed to showing up, telling the truth, and cutting out stigma — together.

Here’s to continued progress, healthier communities and a future grounded in compassion. ✂️🍾

This season, we’re grateful for barbers, partners, and community members who continue to show up for real conversations and better health outcomes all year long.

Wishing you rest, connection, and good health this holiday season. ♥️

A table where public health leaders, clinicians, community partners, and barbers come together. Proof that confidence and belonging open doors, and public health requires collaboration from community leaders in all walks of life. ♥️

Two weeks ago, COS Nashville barbers Steve and DeJuan were in Boston laying the groundwork for COS Boston—meeting with leaders at Mass General Hospital (Dr. Kenneth Freedberg, Director of the Medical Practice Evaluation Center at the Mongan Institute & Dr. Ruanne Barnabas, Chief of Infectious Diseases) and joining a fireside chat with former CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on the power of community-partnered public health.

This is what it looks like to show up and advocate for our communities.

Shoutout to Boston barbers , , .unltd . As well as community partners at , , and .

The work continues, let’s ’cut out stigma.’ 💈✂️

Today, we honor progress.

HIV is preventable, treatable, and with the right tools, untransmittable.

On World AIDS Day, we stand with those living with HIV and keep pushing for a world where information replaces stigma. ♥️

Social media can spark real change, only when used with purpose. ✨✊🏾

In an article published in JMIR Public Health, the Cutting Out Stigma team joined fellow researchers as co-authors to share insights from three NIH-supported studies on community-partnered HIV research.

Here are five keys to doing it right:
1️⃣ Know the power and pitfalls of social media
2️⃣ Messengers and messages both
3️⃣ Understand the social and cultural context
4️⃣ Invest in real community partnerships
5️⃣ Align the work with community needs

At Cutting Out Stigma, we know impact hits hardest when the people most affected lead the conversation.
