Story time:

Dr: "You wont have milk 3-5 days!"
Mom to me: "Get my baby please."

Doc didn't believe that mom had "milk" and said he wanted to see how much she produced before he would discharge the baby. Gave no "amount" just essentially trying to prove a point.

3 minutes later, a point was proven alright.

2 days postpartum and this is what she collected with a manual pump AFTER having latched her baby. All that to prove a point so she could continue to exclusively breastfeed and go home.

Mom stood on business and I was glad to be there to support her.

*Your body starts making milk while you are pregnant, it will change a couple times once baby is born. Your milk is already "in", its only going to change!*

Instances like this are not uncommon. If mom didn't have professional support and prenatal education she would've been defeated and deterred from her goal of exclusive breastfeeding. Do your due diligence and get the help you need before you breastfeed so you aren't blindsided when comments come at you that aren't rooted in evidence.

Some of what doulas do is still unknown to some but rested assured, it all has purpose. The families that hire us know exactly what they are looking for and that we can get the job done!

The research is clear, the use of doulas:
-Reduces the incidence of c-sections
-Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn
-May shorten the length of labor
-Reduces epidural and analgesic requests
-Increases breastfeeding initiation and continuation
-Increases mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
-Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
