Every physical therapist on Earth has prescribed this.

Hospitals use it.
Ortho PTs use it.
Neuro PTs use it.
Geriatric PTs use it... you get the idea...

Patients take it home and stuff it in a drawer.
It weighs almost nothing.
Costs a few dollars.

And it’s probably responsible for more recovered shoulders, knees, and hips than most machines combined.

Yet the company behind it markets like they sell printer paper.
I’m talking about TheraBand.

If TheraBand hired Jimmy (me) tomorrow… here are the first three things I’d do to stop TheraBand from looking like clinic supplies… and start treating it like the universal language of recovery.

1️⃣ Turn the colors into a universal strength language

HOW

TheraBand already created the system:

Yellow → Red → Green → Blue → Black.

Clinicians know it.
Students memorize it.
Patients see it on their exercise sheets.

But no one has turned it into a visual story of progress.

Create a simple series:
“From Yellow to Black.”

Each color marks a chapter in recovery:

Yellow → first movement after injury
Red → rebuilding confidence
Green → normal life returning
Blue → strength returning
Black → stronger than before

NOW...

The bands stop being rubber.
They become milestones.

2️⃣ Show the quiet global reach

HOW

Clinicians from around the world answer one question:

“The first exercise I give almost every patient is…”

And they all hold up the same thing.
TheraBand.

Different accents.
Different clinics.
Same band.

PTs. Athletic trainers. Strength coaches. Cardiac rehab.

WOW

TheraBand becomes the universal dialect of rehabilitation.

3️⃣ Own the moment rehab leaves the clinic

Most recovery doesn’t happen in the clinic.

It happens:
in kitchens
in living rooms
on hotel floors
next to the couch

HOW

Start a series called:

“The most important exercise happens when no one is watching.”

Show the real moment:
A patient doing the "boring" exercise that actually fixes the problem.

Overlay these "boring" exercises with a voice over... about their story, before, during... and what they want.... AFTER...

WOW

TheraBand stops being clinic equipment.
It becomes the bridge between the BEFORE and the patient’s AFTER.

I’m Jimmy, a rock radio DJ turned Doctor of Physical Therapy with 25 years of experience.

I know how to earn attention, I know how clinics actually work, and I know why most healthcare stories never land.

TheraBand doesn’t need new products.

It needs someone to tell the story of the one the entire profession already uses.

Because if you’ve ever done rehab…
You probably started with yellow... 😏

Most healthcare marketing energy is spent on…
stuff that doesn’t matter.
The logo.
The mission statement.
The equipment list.
The “state-of-the-art care” paragraph nobody reads.
Meanwhile the things that actually build attention are painfully simple:
• teach something useful
• tell real stories
• be consistent
• say the thing everyone else is afraid to say
• help people before they ever become patients
Attention isn’t bought.
It’s earned.
And when you earn attention long enough…
trust shows up.
Most clinics are working outside the circle.
The ones growing?
They live inside it.

What would YOU add inside the circle?

If you've worked inside a healthcare organization you've probably heard the question:

“What's the EBITDA impact?”

But what happens when a financial reporting metric slowly becomes the mission of the entire organization?

In this conversation, Jimmy McKay and Larry Benz unpack:

• What EBITDA actually measures
• How "Adjusted EBITDA" becomes a fiction contest
• Why chasing the metric can distort clinical care
• The Soviet nail factory problem in healthcare
• What a healthier dashboard for PT organizations should look like

Larry also explains the four pillars every physical therapy organization should measure instead of obsessing over EBITDA.

If you lead a healthcare organization, this conversation will challenge how you think about metrics, culture, and what actually drives sustainable performance.

New podcast experiment.
I’m calling it:
🔀 Physical Therapy: Cross Examination

Here’s the format.

Two PTs come on the show.
But instead of me interviewing them…
they interview each other.

The twist?

I intentionally pair people who are different.

Examples:
• New grad vs 25-year veteran
• Hospital PT vs cash practice owner
• PTA vs residency-trained PT
• Academic faculty vs full-time clinician
• Rural clinic vs big health system

Each guest shows up with 6 questions they’ve always wanted to ask someone in the other lane.

Not conference questions.
Real questions.

Things like:
“What's the part of your job the rest of PT completely misunderstands?”

or

“What would make you quit your setting tomorrow?”

I’ll just host the conversation and occasionally stir the pot.
Think of it like professional cross-examination… but friendly.

Two PTs.
Six questions each.
One conversation we usually don’t get to hear.

Now the important part:
😏 Who should go first?

Tag two people who should cross-examine each other.
