LJ Takes, Passes…A Volunteer Always There To Help When Called… - Camp Courageous’ sympathy goes out to the family and friends of LJ Takes, 80 of Monticello, IA. LJ started Takes Electric in 1970 and operated it for over 50-years! LJ was one of those individuals Camp Courageous could call at any time, particularly when our backs were against the wall with a complicated problem. Volunteer, Gerry Rohr, who coordinated most the Camp’s Train Project, called LJ immediately when help was needed unloading 40,000 pounds of train rail for Camp’s train system. LJ was one of those who would give a person in need, the shirt off his back. Camp’s sympathy goes out to LJ’s son, Tony and daughter, Terri, along with family and friends.

Trailblazer, Marjorie Stubbe, 95, of Monticello, IA Passes - Camp Courageous is saddened by the passing of Marjorie Stubbe, 95, of Monticello, IA. Marge Hoffman grew up living near Camp Courageous, decades before Courageous was even a thought. Her father had to walk over the Maquoketa River on a footbridge connecting the Jordan to Pictured Rocks. He lived on Richland Road, and his one room schoolhouse was on the Pictured Rocks side of the river. Today that one-room schoolhouse is the home of Camp’s Facilities Director, Cory Mohr.

Marge was a huge advocate of physical fitness, not only in the classroom/gym/out-of-doors…but as a lifetime passion. Marge led by example, having been a University of Iowa student in the field of physical education and an Iowa cheerleader from 1950-1953. Each summer she would return home and teach swimming to area children.

Marge loved to bring students to Camp Courageous to hike the trails through the forest…and on many days, she would check-in, in the office and go for walks in the forest on her own….she loved nature.

Marge was a trailblazer and had the lifetime thrill to watch women’s athletics grow from nothing to something on an even level as men’s…sometimes exceeding! Throughout the decades she took leadership roles in Iowa State Advisory Board for Hight School Girls Athletic Union and played a huge role in all women’s sports.

Marge’s passion also extended to those with special needs…giving them the same opportunity to play on a level playing field as the athletically gifted.

Marge Stubbe has been around long enough that she taught Camp Courageous Board Member, Jim Zimmerman, in 6th grade! She later subbed for Jim at Sacred Heart. Jim talked of what a great teacher she was.

Along with taking students, family and friends on nature hikes (she was exceptional on IDing plants, trees, and loved wild edibles), Marge volunteered endless hours helping with special camper events like the Back-To-School Festival and the Spring-Break-Bash, where she provided actives to thousands of campers. She loved being around the campers.

In recent years Marge loved when Camp Courageous staff brought animals to her, at Pennington Square (Camp-To-You). Camp staff like Sue Chapman and Kaite Ryan brought Tater and Tot…a couple guinea pigs to Marge, who was thrilled!

In addition to watching women’s sports grow by leaps and bounds, Marge had the opportunity to watch Camp Courageous grow from a tree farm to the wonderful facility it is today. Over the years Marge was very involved and taught many a Camp Courageous Counselor.

Marge’s goal in life was to “surround your life with beauty and fun and share it with others.”

Camp’s sympathy goes out to Marge’s son, Steve, along with her many friends. Her legacy will live on at Camp and through the lives of her thousands of students over the decades.

Respite: Once Upon a Time📖👑 -
“Once Upon a Time” our campers attended camp for a Respite Weekend and had an AMAZING time! The campers enjoyed fairytale themed activities like puppet making, and storytelling, along with making new memories with friends to add to their personal stories. They also helped knock the dust off the zipline and used it after the cold winter months!! We are excited for the warm weather to stay and look forward to having the campers back to enjoy some more fun outdoor activities!

Cedar Rapids Thursday Noon Optimist Celebrates Their 50th Anniversary of Supporting Camp Courageous! -

Thank you to Jeff Schmatt, (Back-Left-With Camera), for inviting Camp Courageous to give a presentation to the Cedar Rapids Thursday Noon Optimist Club and for giving Camp Courageous the opportunity to celebrate their 50th Anniversary of supporting Camp Courageous! We fondly remember splitting wood by hand, behind the old lodge, with Gary Kouba (former WMT staffer) and the rest of the Club, back in 1980, . Don Peterson, also a member, was among the first Petroleum Marketers of Iowa to take Camp Courageous under their wing in 1981. Chuck Gartner is another of their great members who has provided Camp Courageous with insightful guidance and support over the years. Most of their club members have helped at the camp’s breakfasts/open houses and other events. Most also attended a meeting at Camp Courageous last year and were able to take a grand tour and do the zipline! Super group! We always appreciate the opportunity to cross paths.

It was especially heartwarming to see (L-R) Gary Kouba and Don Peterson…two members, whose support of Camp Courageous spans 50-years! Gary was a long time WMT employee and Don was a long time FUELIowa member. Two exceptional individuals!

Day 3 of Training Week is complete!

Today the counselors focused on learning the proper techniques for transferring campers safely and completing CPR training. These important skills help ensure every camper is supported, safe, and cared for throughout their time at Camp Courageous.

We are so proud of the dedication and hard work our staff is putting in as they prepare for an amazing year at camp!

In The Beginning There Was The World’s Largest Garage Sale - In summer of 1974 the first 211 campers came to Camp Courage. The camp was nearly $20,000 in debt, and many creditors were becoming concerned. Thus, was born the World’s Largest Garage Sale. The idea of Tait Cummins and Jerry Brady (General Manager of WMT), the sale was held November 1 and 2, 1974, at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids and raised $10,000. Items for the sale came from as far as Charles City and Muscatine and an estimated 750-1000 volunteers worked to make it a success. This sale, along with other smaller fund-raisers, was enough to pull the camp out of debt. WMT-Radio and WMT-TV also provided desperately needed publicity for what was then a brand new, unknown charity. The camp also received widespread publicity when it was chosen as the statewide fund-raising projects for Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, The Eagles, VFW, and VFW Auxiliary. From the World’s Largest Garage Sale, Alfred Egger headed back to his home in Manchester, IA and thought, ‘we can do that here in Manchester, out of my house…thus was born the Manchester Garage Sale…Camp Courageous’ largest fund raiser…more history to come-Charlie

John B. “Jack” Kuriger Passes-A Family Legacy - Camp Courageous is saddened by the recent passing of John “Jack” Kuriger, 84, of Cascade, originally from Monticello, IA. Jack was involved with Camp Courageous, as a volunteer, since the beginning, as his dad, Bernard Kuriger and Uncle, Clarence Kuriger did the original plumbing, along with anything else that needed to be done during those earliest days. In addition, Jack grew up understanding the importance of Camp Courageous with a sister, Pat, who had Downs Syndrome. The Kurigers worked closely with their dear friend, Clete Goedken, who was Camp’s Volunteer Maintenance person for the first 25+years. Clete volunteered 7-days a week and his number one ‘go to’ person was Bernard Kuriger, who was a profession plumber by trade. They also worked side by side with the Camp’s first director, Gary Turbes. All four were the first to be inducted onto Camp’s Honorary Board along with Tait Cummins and Leo Greco. Jack often was called on to help his Dad during those early years. After school, Jack went away to serve our country in the Air Force and the National Guard. When Jack returned to the area (Cascade) he right away embarked on keeping his family’s legacy alive by volunteering and attending almost all Camp Courageous events. Jack had a wonderful personality, like the rest of the family, and was one of those who never met a stranger. Jack was a wonderful son…and all those times with his dad, paid off in a lifetime of helping others with plumbing and electrical challenges. Jack’s many visits to Camp Courageous with donations and a sincere desire to help, will be dearly missed. Jack was preceded in death by his parents (Bernard & Minnis); his first wife, Rosemary Johnson; four sisters, Mary Ann (Frank) Miller Katherine Kuriger, Sheila Chambers and Pat Kuriger…each one, an incredible treasure…-Charlie
