We have our very own ‘antiques roadshow’ with Susan, our volunteer and collector, who brings 100-year-old artifacts from her personal collection. Susan visits us once a week and brings a basket of new muses to touch and tell stories about. We’re so grateful for her thoughtful engagement each week!

We gathered with Fairmont Farm’s “Udderly Crazy 4-H Club” from East Montpelier to celebrate the holidays and sing carols. It was a delightful visit with so many smiles – cookies and apple cider, too! This is their third annual visit to Clara’s Garden and we’re so grateful for the intergenerational engagement. Special thanks to Fairmont Farm for making this happen each year!

Kellogg-Hubbard Library brings their “story time” to The Gary Residence once a month. This month, we sang songs, played with rhymes, and danced. It was a beautiful intergenerational gathering topped off with bubbles!

Several weeks ago, our friend Jeannie shared her love of making bracelets with us here at The Gary Residence! She brought so many beautiful beads and all the accoutrement. With her guidance, we each made our own unique piece. There is so much wrapped into a tactile engagement like this – and it’s a new piece of jewelry to wear and chat about! What a gift – thank you so much, Jeannie!

This week is Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights – and we asked ourselves “What is Diwali?” We dove into an adult learning session that included dancing to the sounds of Bollywood Diwali party music, tasting a special Indian rice pudding made with cardamom, and visioning the vibrant colors of Diwali rangoli – a unique art form traditionally made with materials like colored sand, rice flour, and flower petals. It was quite a celebration!

Melissa and Paul Perley visited us and shared Melissa’s award-winning children’s book, “The Violin Family." They also brought a family of instruments for our residents to play! These beautiful instruments seemed to resonate in unique ways for each holder. This multi-sensory experience was truly magical! Thank you, Melissa and Paul!

Our Story

Established in 1941, The Gary Residence is a senior living community like no other. We are a residential care community that includes 13 private suites in an historic downtown home in Montpelier, Vermont. At The Gary Residence, we strive to preserve the values of a private home with the greatest possible amount of freedom and individual choice. We blend a healthy balance of independence with the right amount of support, with plenty of privacy and just the right mix of activities and amenities. Residents remain as active as they want to be while enjoying the comforts of our natural home setting. As a licensed residential care home, we provide room, board, personal care, general supervision, nursing oversight and medical management, but not full-time nursing care. Our residents enjoy their own suites with private bath, elegant common areas, an engaging staff, and a lively activity calendar.
