Nobody’s doubting good intentions. But here’s what the evidence tends to show…
👅Most children with tongue ties develop normal speech.
👅Ankyloglossia alone is not strongly associated with speech sound disorders in most research studies.
👅Tongue mobility/function matters more than appearance.
👅A short lingual frenulum does not always restrict function or tongue movement needed for speech.
👅Speech sounds rarely require extreme tongue elevation.
👅Most speech sounds can be produced with compensatory tongue movements, even with limited lingual range.
👅 “Compensations” in speech are not inherently pathological.
👅Teaching accurate placement with restriction is not necessarily harmful if it’s not effortful.
👅 Speech therapy is still needed to change learned speech patterns.
👅Tongue ties may affect functions beyond speech (feeding, oral hygiene, dental development).
👅 Clinical decisions should be based on functional assessment, not anatomy alone.
👅 Recommending a frenectomy is outside the scope of practice for SLPs. Surgical decisions should be made by the family and their medical provider.
