Adult & Teen Challenge Connecticut

Adult & Teen Challenge Connecticut Giving Hope To Adults & Families. Teen Challenge is one of the oldest, largest and most successful programs of its kind in the world.

Established in 1958 by David Wilkerson, Teen Challenge has grown to more than 170 centers in the United States. In 2012, an estimated 22.2 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year (8.5 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.8 million were classified with dependence or abuse of both alcohol and illicit drugs, 4.5 million had dependence or abuse of illicit drugs but not alcohol, and 14.9 million had dependence or abuse of alcohol but not illicit drugs. Overall, 17.7 million had alcohol dependence or abuse, and 7.3 million had illicit drug dependence or abuse. Teen Challenge has responded with action to statistics like these. Providing residential and non-residential care for thousands of men and women seeking freedom from life-controlling problems, Teen Challenge has become their answer. In the process of breaking down the addiction cycle, Teen Challenge has become a solution to the addiction crisis. Teen Challenge is known throughout the world for providing successful recovery programs. Enthusiastic law enforcement officials, judges, mayors, governors and other prominent community and country leaders advocate the mission of Teen Challenge. Several United States presidents have voiced their appreciation for the unique work of Teen Challenge. Teen Challenge is structured to allow flexibility in meeting the needs of those whose lives have been shattered by addictions. Where residential care is needed, Teen Challenge offers a well-developed, multi-phased discipleship training program. Teen Challenge also provides extensive non-residential assistance through personal and group sessions. Prevention programs are provided to thousands each year through public school assemblies and church meetings. Teen Challenge has significant impact on local communities. By the time an individual enters Teen Challenge he has typically had almost every relationship and family tie shattered that might be helpful in recovery. He has usually formed strong relationships with people and groups that actually perpetuate the addiction spiral. After completing Teen Challenge, hope is restored to more than just the addict, but to the family as well. Solid, positive relationships within community and family are also re-established. Teen Challenge involvement in a community facilitates a reduction in drug-related crimes in the area. Prevention efforts within the community improve since recovered addicts exert a profound impact on family, friends, and community. The economic cost to society is reduced and restored men and women become contributors to their community. Teen Challenge even participates in community projects, outreaches, food bank services, correctional facility meetings, thrift stores and work projects. Many Teen Challenge programs offer assistance and referral services to the community

Mike’s addiction began early. By the time he was in high school he was buying pills at school, eventually turning to he**in. His life spiraled quickly. Within a year of graduation, he was running drugs across state lines and committing robberies to feed his addiction. Eventually he was arrested and charged with 14 felonies, facing mandatory prison time.

With nowhere else to turn, Mike walked through the doors of Adult and Teen Challenge in 2004. There he encountered something he had never experienced before: real accountability, genuine love, and the truth of the gospel. In a December chapel service, the reality of Jesus’ sacrifice broke through his hardened heart, and everything changed.

The transformation was unmistakable. Mike devoted himself to prayer, Scripture, and serving others. Miraculously, the judge assigned to his case reduced his expected sentence from decades in prison to probation, a turning point that allowed him to rebuild his life.

In 2006, Mike’s mother Josephine came into the program. She had been struggling with crippling alcoholism for nearly 30 years. While it was the hardest thing she ever had to do, Josephine graduated the program. Their strained relationship was completely restored.

Today, Mike and Josephine are living proof of God’s restoring power. He worked for Adult and Teen Challenge for years, built a family, bought a home, and now uses his gifts to serve, encourage, and bring hope to others through Christian comedy.
Stories like Mike’s are why our Dollar a Day campaign matters. One dollar a day helps men and women trapped in addiction find the same hope, freedom, and new beginning that changed his life forever.

Alex was only a teenager when he started experimenting with alcohol. In spite of knowing God’s call on his life, he started to drink more and more. By his early twenties, drinking was no longer something he chose.

In 2019, Alex walked through the doors of Adult and Teen Challenge, determined to stop running from the Lord. In the middle of his brokenness, God met him and changed everything.

Today, Alex serves as the youth leader at Pembroke Assembly of God, investing in young people who are facing the same pressures and temptations he once did. His story is a reminder that freedom is possible and that transformation reaches far beyond our residents.

Our Dollar-a-Day campaign continues to make stories like Alex’s possible. When friends like you come alongside us with just one dollar a day, you help provide the long-term discipleship, structure, and Christ-centered care that lead to lasting freedom. If you believe in giving hope, consider joining us. Your support helps change the trajectory of lives every single day.
