💭🎤As we wrap up AAC awareness month our speech therapists wanted to take a minute to explain what AAC is!
AAC or Augmentative and Alternative Communication gives a voice to anyone who communicates in ways other than speech. From picture boards to speech-generating devices, AAC helps people express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas every single day.
In our video you’ll see us use buttons, low-tech communication boards, and a high-tech speech generated device or a device that has audible speech out. You’ll even see sign language modeled (HELP and MORE). All of these options fall under the term Augmentative and Alternative communication.
✨ Did you know? Research shows that using AAC actually supports language development, it doesn’t stop it!
When people use AAC, they’re learning how to communicate, build vocabulary, and understand language in the same way others do, just with different tools. Whether it’s pictures, symbols, or a speech device, AAC supports learning to talk and connect, not replace it.
Let’s keep the conversation going, because everyone deserves a voice! 💬
