🚨 You are NOT your MRI! 🚨

A massive new study just published in JAMA Internal Medicine is changing the way we look at shoulder pain. Researchers looked at MRI scans of adults over 40 and found some staggering results:

💥 98.7% had some form of rotator cuff “abnormality.” 💥 62% had partial rotator cuff tears. 💥 11% had FULL rotator cuff tears.

But here is the most mind-blowing part: THE PAIN FREE SHOULDERS HAD ESSENTIALLY THE SAME RESULTS 🤯

What does this mean for you? If you have shoulder pain and get an MRI that shows a tear or degeneration, it doesn’t automatically mean you need surgery. Just like getting wrinkles or gray hair as we age, our joints, tendons, and ligaments show “wrinkles on the inside.” Tissue changes do not always equal pain, and pain does not always mean your tissue is severely damaged!

Dusty Harman and I met when he reached out for a running analysis. We later found out that we shared the fact that both our wives had experienced cancer. That is not a bond I ever want to share with someone, but I am grateful to have met him. His wife ultimately passed away due to her rare form of cancer called sarcoma and Dusty is now on a mission to help ensure that never becomes a reality for anyone else. This patient's primary complaint was hip pain, but it's our job as PTs to know when to look deeper. Notice the needles also placed in the back? Turns out her symptoms are likely stemming from the TLJ region of the spine which can refer to the hips. We could treat a "hip busitis" all day and not even be coming close to the source of the issue.
