đĽšEmotions on the TableđĽš
Have you ever found yourself wanting to cry⌠or even laugh⌠in the middle of a massage?
Youâre not aloneâand more importantly, thereâs nothing wrong with you. In fact, itâs incredibly normal.
When we experience stress, injury, trauma, or even just the wear and tear of daily life, our bodies donât just âmove on.â They adapt. Muscles tighten, breathing patterns shift, and our nervous system stores these experiences in ways we donât always consciously recognize. As The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk explores, the body quite literally holds onto our experiencesâespecially the overwhelming ones.
So what happens when you finally slow down⌠and allow someone to work into those areas?
Your nervous system starts to shift.
Massage and bodywork help move the body out of a chronic âfight or flightâ state (sympathetic nervous system) and into ârest and digestâ (parasympathetic). As this happens:
⢠Muscles begin to release long-held tension
⢠Breathing deepens
⢠Heart rate slows
⢠And the brain starts to process stored information differently
This shift can create a sense of vulnerabilityâand that vulnerability can open the door for emotional release.
Pain itself also plays a role. When weâve been guarding an area for a long time, the body builds protective patterns. As those layers unwind, the brain sometimes interprets the change as both relief and exposure. Thatâs where unexpected emotions can surface.
For some individualsâespecially survivors of physical or sexual traumaâsafe, intentional touch can be even more profound. Therapeutic bodywork can help rewire neural pathways, gently teaching the nervous system that touch can be safe again. This process doesnât just affect musclesâit impacts the brain, the emotional centers, and the way we relate to our own bodies.
And itâs not just massage.
Acupuncture also works on both physical and emotional levels. By stimulating specific points in the body, it can help regulate the nervous system, release stagnation, and support emotional balance. Many people find that it creates a deep sense of calm while allowing buried stress or emotions to move through the body more freely.
All of this to sayâif youâve ever felt emotional on the table, your body is not âoverreacting.â
Itâs responding. Processing. Letting go.
And thatâs a powerful thing.
Our space is here to support you through all of itâwhether youâre looking for relief from physical pain, nervous system regulation, or simply a moment to breathe and reconnect. We will never pry, but will be there hold space for you if you want to talk about it. â¤ď¸
