SPIRULINA FOR ENERGY⁠ 💚

Spirulina changed my life 10 years ago. It was a way to get loads of nutrients into my body when I was at my weakest. Some foods truly are a miracle and to this day I still consume it daily! It's hugely impactful for your energy levels.

It's powerful for energy for many reasons but here are a few to note: ⁠

⚡️Rich in chlorophyll: chlorophyll is helpful for increasing energy because of how it transfers energy inside the body. ATP (energy molecules in the body) are manufactured by mitochondria - which exist in your cells. Chlorophyll helps this process by transferring electrons. This process accelerates the production of energy molecules (ATP) inside the body. It's energy on a cellular level!⁠

⚡️Contains thiamin (vitamin B1): When the body is deficient in Thiamin, you will more commonly experience fatigue and weakness. Spirulina provides 11% of your daily requirement for Thiamin.⁠

⚡️Has a full amino acid profile: Certain amino acids like glutamine and phenylalanine are helpful for maintaining energy. If the body is deficient in amino acids, many of the functions, like energy production, won't run⁠
effectively. ⁠

Are you sold on spirulina yet? If so, below are three easy ways you can consume spirulina in your diet: ⁠

1️⃣ Spirulina + Orange Juice: Pour 8 oz. of orange juice and 2 tsp. Spirulina powder into a glass. Mix up and drink! This is a great energy booster in the morning if you want green juice energy without using a juicer. ⁠

2️⃣ Spirulina smoothie: 1 cup coconut water, handful spinach, 2 stalks celery, ½ cup frozen mango, ½ banana, 1 Tbsp. spirulina powder. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth!⁠

3️⃣ Spirulina tablets: If you really can’t stand the taste of spirulina, you can buy it in tablet form and take it daily! ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠

What you juice matters for the volume and quality of your juice. You always want to have a base ingredient that is very water-rich. For example, celery and cucumbers 🥒 are both very water-rich vegetables. They yield much more juice compared to something like spinach right? 🍃Not much water in that. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
My go-to is always celery, cucumber, apple, and lemon 🌱🥒🍎🍋 Recently I’ve been adding ginger daily too 😋 You can pretty much juice just about anything, but I always recommend including some type of green vegetable. Also, citrus 🍊really helps with bitterness. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
When you’re getting started, just start experimenting with different things 👩🏼‍🔬 It’s the best way to learn! The more you do it the more fun it gets too. You’ll find what combos you like and get in your own groove. If you have kids, get them involved. It’s a healthy habit you can instill in them too.⁠⠀

🍏The biggest thing to remember here is that juicing is something positive you can do for yourself🍏

The two types of juicers you can purchase and their differences ⬇️⁠⠀

1️⃣ Centrifugal juicer - more affordable and they use speed and heat to extract juice. This ends up with more nutrient loss and less liquid extracted from your fruits and vegetables. I started out with a centrifugal juicer and it worked for a while but I eventually upgraded to a masticating juicer once I learned more about them.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
2️⃣ Masticating juicer - a bit more expensive and uses lower speed and pressure to extract liquid. This allows more nutrients to be preserved and more liquid from your produce. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Masticating juicers are what I always recommend now. It’s worth the extra investment for sure. The masticating juicers are way easier to clean too. Plus, if you’re making juice for the nutrients, don’t you want as many nutrients as possible in your juice? It just makes sense. ⁠⠀

I personally recommend the Omega Masticating J8006 model. I’ve had mine since 2013 and it still works like a champ! This is the model shown in the image above. ⁠⠀

I don’t wake up motivated to make juice every day, but I make the choice based on how I want to feel. If I wake up more tired than usual that’s more of a reason to put in the extra effort to make juice to improve my energy that day. You can quickly become a juicing fanatic and make yourself juice in 10 minutes. I make it with my 18-month-old attached to my hip most days. It's not hard.⁠⠀

Here’s another thing 👉🏼 once you start doing it regularly and feel the difference, you won’t want to be without it anyways.⁠⠀

Now let’s chat about best practices for juicing and how to safely incorporate it into your routine... ⁠⠀

1️⃣ Juice before breakfast. I typically do lemon water first, green juice next, and then a smoothie after. It’s like a nutrient and hydration explosion. The energy is unreal. I don’t drink caffeine because I don’t need it!⁠⠀

2️⃣ Juicing is also helpful in the afternoon for that energy slump you might experience. It’s a great way to flood your body with nutrients that you might be depleted from earlier in the day. ⁠⠀

First let’s clarify what juicing is. I see a lot of people get confused with the difference between a juice and a smoothie. They’re two totally different things. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
🍋 Juicing is a process in which the liquid is extracted from a fruit or vegetable removing the fiber or solid matter like pulp and seeds. Think of it as pure liquid nutrition from your fruits and veggies. This process is done in a juicer. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
🍋 A smoothie is made in a blender and it includes all the fiber and solid parts of the fruit or vegetable. It’s a pureed texture rather than a straight liquid like juice is. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
➡️ So the main difference here is fiber. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
“So why wouldn’t you just make a smoothie then and get all the good stuff?” ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Well, you should. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have juicing as part of your healthy lifestyle too. Here’s why you should incorporate juicing into your daily routine: ⁠⠀

1️⃣ Juicing allows you to get MORE nutrients by extracting them in large volumes.⁠⠀

Googling "how to cook chicken breast" and testing my skills at 10pm the night before I started working for my first Personal Chef client 😮⁠⠀

I cooked a lot growing up, I worked as a Raw Food Chef for a period of time, but I had never cooked a chicken breast and I had just been hired by a client to be his Personal Chef 2 days a week. It wasn't even a service I offered but I said YES because I knew I could do it 💪🏼⠀

I was an amateur. I had no idea what I was doing 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I taught myself along the way. Meal prep isn't something that I was great at overnight. It took time.⁠⠀

Over the last 7 years as a Personal Chef my meal prep skills have expanded far and wide. I've learned how to meal prep just about anything and keep it fresh. I’ve worked for numerous clients and taught even more 👩🏼‍🍳⠀

Wondering how that first client turned out? I worked for him for 5+ years before I eventually moved across the state. And let’s just say I still miss cooking in that beautiful kitchen 😭⠀

If you get wronged by someone and hold a grudge, you're the one who loses. ⁠⠀

I've been dealt some "unfair" cards throughout my life in regards to my health. But what I learned very early on is that I could either sulk in it and stay sick or I could rise from it and be healed. I became better instead of bitter. I made the choice to take responsibility for my health and my life.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So many times in our lives we can say "why me?" but those are opportunities to say "YES ME". Growth is a choice. Wisdom is earned. Feel, heal, and move on. ⁠⠀

With your health, with your relationships, with your work, with your country... being bitter is easy. Becoming better is what we all need. To yourself. To each other. To the world.⁠⠀

I'm sure you feel it right now... the weight of your responsibilities, the Halloween hangover, the one less hour of sunlight in your day, pandemic anxiety, election nerves... you're dealing with a lot right now 😬⠀
⁠⠀
So why not do something positive for yourself that's in your control?⁠ 👏🏼⠀
⁠⠀
Think about this: you eat food that's processed, dead, or artificial. How do you expect to feel good when your food isn't even energizing? ⁠🤷🏼‍♀️⠀
⁠⠀
It's important to take care of yourself right now. One way you can do that is to give your body nutrient-dense foods that are going to flood your body with enzymes and nutrients. It doesn't have to be hard or overwhelming. It can be simple like this:⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✅Have fresh herbs ready to go⁠⠀
✅Chop veggies ahead to make dinner later⁠⠀
✅Get a healthy snack ready to eat⁠⠀
✅Prep greens to throw in a smoothie⁠⠀
✅Batch prep a protein like shredded chicken⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This spread took me 15 minutes. Not a lot, but it makes things a little easier for me as I go through the week. And its intentional with colorful veggies and greens 🥕🥬⠀

Quick nutrition lesson for you before the recipe⁠:

This recipe uses tahini. If you don't know what tahini is, it's a paste made from sesame seeds with a smooth consistency. It's most commonly found in hummus!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Sesame seeds are a very nutrient-dense food but often overlooked. They are 35% protein and contain antioxidants that promote liver health. They're also great for lowering cholesterol and regulating digestion. Food fact 🤓 the black sesame seeds are the most nutrient-dense!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Tahini, coconut, and pumpkin are the star ingredients of these Pumpkin Energy Balls 🎃 You’re getting protein + healthy fat + complex carbohydrates in each bite to provide a steady energy in a snack that you will enjoy eating.⁠ Savory with a little sweetness, you'll love having these as something to grab and eat in your fridge for a quick energy boost 💥⁠⠀

〰️Ingredients:⁠⠀
1/2 cup coconut flour⁠⠀
2 Tbsp. melted and cooled coconut oil⁠⠀
1/2 cup pumpkin puree⁠⠀
1/4 cup tahini⁠⠀
4 Tbsp. maple syrup⁠⠀
2 tsp. cinnamon⁠⠀
1/4 cup sesame seeds (black, white, or both)⁠⠀
⁠⠀
〰️How to:⁠⠀
Pour sesame seeds onto a plate and set aside.⁠⠀
In a mixing bowl, add the coconut flour, coconut oil, pumpkin puree, tahini, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Mix well until all the ingredients are incorporated. The mixture will be dry - that's totally fine!⁠⠀
Roll the dough into balls by picking up some dough, pressing the mixture, and rolling it between your hands.⁠⠀
Roll ball into the sesame seeds to coat the outside and continue the process until all the dough is used.⁠⠀
You should end with 12-15 evenly sized balls.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Store in the refrigerator!⠀
