Manual Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritic Knee Pain

Among a group of 46 rheumatoid arthritis patients with knee pain, those treated with ten sessions of manual therapy (joint mobilization and post isometric relaxation) experienced a greater reduction in knee pain than participants who received a standard exercise intervention. The research team recommends further studies to determine the role of manual therapy techniques, such as those provided by doctors of chiropractic, in the management of rheumatoid arthritis patients with musculoskeletal pain.

Manual Therapies for Low Back Pain
A myofascial trigger point is a hyperirritable spot found in skeletal muscle that is associated with chronic pain conditions, including chronic low back pain. In this study, researchers compared the effect of three manual therapies—manual pressure release, strain counterstrain, and integrated neuromuscular inhibition technique—on 48 patients with chronic low back pain and observed that each were effective at deactivating trigger points and improving low back pain and disability. Doctors of chiropractic often incorporate several manual therapy interventions when treating patients with chronic low back pain, depending on the patient’s unique case and needs.

Ma*****na Use May Cause False Memories

In a recent experiment, researchers observed that taking just one hit of ma*****na doubled the likelihood a participant would generate false memories during a virtual reality scenario. Study author Dr. Johannes Ramaekers notes, “We are all prone to the formation of false memories, independent of cannabis use… The susceptibility for false memory, however, increases with cannabis. Under cannabis, users can easily accept fake truths for true memory.” With the increasing legalization of ma*****na, Dr. Ramaekers and his colleagues warn than an increase in false memories could affect family, work, and social lives, as well as criminal investigations.

Most Seniors Don’t Get Enough Protein

Dietary assessments of 256 seniors revealed that less than 50% of participants met current recommendations for protein intake per day. Researcher Dr. Bernard Corfe writes, “We know protein consumption, especially when combined with exercise, helps to slow down the loss of muscle mass and strength that comes with aging… Inadequate protein intake contributes to muscle wastage, impacting physical function and increasing the risk of frailty and mortality through falls. This risk is again increased in older adults with obesity, who may be unable to exercise or move freely, as their weight may mask the problem.”

Opioid Overdoses Involving Kids & Teens…

An in-depth analysis of nearly 754,000 American opioid poisoning cases revealed that the percentage of children with a suspected su***de due to an opioid poisoning increased dramatically from 14% in 2005 to more than 21% by 2018. Additionally, the number of young patients admitted to a critical care unit following an opioid overdose rose nearly 50% during the same time frame. Dr. Linda Richter, the director of policy research and analysis with the Center on Addiction in New York City writes, “If common-sense recommendations for keeping all opioid and other addictive products out of sight and reach of children are followed, the number of children accidentally exposed to opioids and their harmful effects can and should be zero and the number of teens who access these drugs intentionally would be greatly reduced.”
