Blue Ridge includes hospitals in Morganton and Valdese, Phifer Wellness Center, Grace Ridge Retirement Community, and the Blue Ridge Medical Group of physician practices.

Recently, at the Carolina Care Conference, hosted by the UNC Health system, our Medical Group and Surgical Services teams were honored for their top quartile performance in patient experience for fiscal year 2025!

What does top quartile mean? It means these teams ranked in the top 25% nationally for patient experience scores—an incredible achievement that reflects their dedication to compassionate, high-quality care.

Even more impressive, both teams also earned this recognition in 2024, proving their commitment to consistently delivering exceptional experiences for our patients.

Join us in congratulating DAISY Award winner Jessica Wenck, RN!

Jessica's nomination said: "My mother was placed in rehab in a nursing home. Just a few days later, she was rushed to the hospital due to a possible stroke. After several stressful hours in the ED, she was admitted to the hospital. Confused, scared, and deeply distraught about what was happening to her, the first face she saw when she entered the room was Jessica. From that very moment, this nurse's presence brought comfort and calm to a very frightening situation. When I entered shortly after, I saw this nurse sitting by my mother’s bedside, gently holding her hand and reassuring her that everything was going to be ok. Her words, tone, and actions conveyed a deep sense of care and commitment. Jessica’s compassion was evident in every interaction, not only with my mom but with me as well. She consistently kept me informed about my mother’s care and progress, never once making me feel like a burden for asking questions. She understood how much my mom had already been through, and it was clear she treated her with the dignity and empathy my mom deserved. Jessica’s compassion for nursing and dedication to her patients did not go unnoticed. In such a difficult and uncertain time for our family, she was a steady, caring presence and her actions exemplify what the DAISY Award represents, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition."

Recently, a patient’s family member shared that their sibling was hospitalized, and spoke with deep appreciation for the excellent care that was provided throughout their stay. In particular, they expressed heartfelt gratitude for Melissa, noting that she went above and beyond in caring for their sibling. Her kindness, professionalism, and compassion made a lasting impression, not only for the patient but also on the patient’s family. Melissa’s actions demonstrated exceptional, patient-centered care delivered with genuine empathy. The patient's family wanted to recognize her for the positive impact she made during a difficult time.

Congratulations to our newest Carolina Care Champions, Dr. Kirkland, Dr. Balasingham, Jordan Victor, Sherri Messer, Jonathan Mazzola, Ella Lewis, Kaela Fox, Lori Reed, and Kyla Cline!

In their nomination, a patient's husband commended these teammates on their professionalism, efficiency, friendliness, and courtesy they extended during the patient's five-day stay at UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton.

"Each phase of my wife’s treatment was unbelievably magnificent. Not one problem arose, and not one negative experience occurred during her stay. I requested to remain with my wife while the team addressed her medical needs and I was provided all items necessary to keep me comfortable and warm. Nurses, CNAs, nurse assistants and others worked around the clock to meet my wife’s medical, personal, and hygienic needs. I did not get the names of several of the teammates attending to my wife, but my compliments go to Dr. Kirkland, Dr. Balasingham, Jordan, Sherri, Jonathan, Ella, Kaela, Lori, and Kyla. I would recommend your facility and staff to anyone, and I express my heartfelt thanks to all of them for so diligently caring for my wife."

Join us in welcoming James A. Bigham, NP, to the staff of McDowell Express Care!

James earned his Master of Science in Nursing from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. He is board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Prior to joining McDowell Express Care, he served patients at Mission Health Center Sugar Hill and Farmington Community Health Center. His clinical interests include rural health care and expanding access to quality care in underserved communities.

When not working, he enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking, paddling, and fly fishing. He lives with his wife Brittany and their two dogs, Max and Finn.
