About Fiber

Fiber comes from plant-based foods and is a carbohydrate. Unlike most carbohydrates, it does not absorb into your digestive system. Other carbohydrates are absorbed as sugar (quickly raising blood sugar) but when fiber is present, it slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, which leaves you feeling better after a meal!

Fiber comes in 2 different forms: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and slows down digestion. Insoluble fiber pulls water and creates a softer stool but does not dissolve in water.

Why choose whole grains over refined grains?

Whole grains are unique because they come in so many different varieties. Often it is hard to get people to switch from refined grains such as white bread and white rice to whole grain products like 100% whole wheat bread and quinoa. The good news is, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the recommendation for good health is that we make 50% of the grains we eat whole grains.

Why are whole grains so important to choose? Whole grains provide important components such as fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Changing the grains you eat does not have to be a difficult task. Example: switching your cereal in the morning. Look for a cereal that has 20% of the Daily Value for fiber. Check the label! Many cereals are made from whole grains.
