Improving the lives of West Virginians by providing evidence-based services and training opportunities, conducting research to continually pursue new and innovative approaches to care and support, and sharing information about supports and resources. Established in 1978, the Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) is located in Morgantown, West Virginia and has a satellite office in Big Chimney, West Virginia with staff located in offices across the state to better serve clients in their communities. The CED is a unit within West Virginia University (WVU) Health Sciences Center, and because of the placement within the University, has access and alignment within the Schools of Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry. As a federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), we are part of a national network of similar centers across the country and serve as a resource to the community in the areas of education, research and service as it relates to the needs of people with disabilities.

Last week, we introduced our brand new homepage redesign that includes some new pages that focus on our areas of emphasis here at the CED. One of those areas to get a brand new page is Access to Healthcare.

Improving access to quality healthcare for people with disabilities is a complex challenge that requires teamwork from policymakers, healthcare providers, and the community.

This new page features info on healthcare barriers, types of care (preventive care, specialized care, patient-centered care, mental health services, and more), how to find providers, and a list of healthcare apps for iOS, Android, and web.

The Paths for Parents (P4P) program at the WVU CED is partnering with the Down Syndrome Network of West Virginia (DSNWV) to host a SibShop at their upcoming Step Up for Down Syndrome event held on May 16 at 12 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Clarksburg, WV!

What is a SibShop? SibShops are high-energy, fun-filled events for kids ages 8-13 who have a sibling with a disability. These gatherings are a chance to meet other siblings who "get it," make new friends, and play fun games. Along the way, kids also learn a bit about the supports and services their siblings receive in a relaxed, supportive environment.

What is Step Up? Step Up is a family fun day and team fundraiser to help support DSNW services including medical and community outreach, the family care assistance program, and regional connections/resource sharing. Participants are encouraged to form teams and help raise funds and awareness. Individuals with Down syndrome can register for free.

We're excited to show off our brand new homepage design!

The first thing you'll notice is the new banner featuring Country Roads students in their graduation caps and gowns. This is actually a video slideshow that you can view by pressing the orange "play" button in the bottom right-hand corner of the banner! The slideshow features photos and video clips from some of our many programs, events, and clinics. You can pause the slideshow at any time by pressing the blue "pause" button.

You'll also notice our four Areas of Emphasis: Access to Healthcare, Employment, Health & Wellness, and Transitions. These each have a dedicated page full of tons of info and resources. Both Access to Healthcare and Employment are brand new pages that we will discuss more in depth later this week!

If you scroll a little further on the homepage you will find our CED News section and our trainee spotlights. Directions to both the Morgantown and Charleston CED locations are at the bottom of the page along with contact info.

We hope you enjoy the new design!
