Improving the lives of West Virginians by providing evidence-based services and training opportunities, conducting research to continually pursue new and innovative approaches to care and support, and sharing information about supports and resources. Established in 1978, the Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) is located in Morgantown, West Virginia and has a satellite office in Big Chimney, West Virginia with staff located in offices across the state to better serve clients in their communities. The CED is a unit within West Virginia University (WVU) Health Sciences Center, and because of the placement within the University, has access and alignment within the Schools of Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry. As a federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), we are part of a national network of similar centers across the country and serve as a resource to the community in the areas of education, research and service as it relates to the needs of people with disabilities.

We're excited to share that the IMPACT WV team's research article, "Evaluating the IMPACT WV training portal: Advancing substance use and family support education in rural West Virginia," has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Digital Health!

This study highlights the development and evaluation of the IMPACT WV training portal, our online educational resource designed to support service providers working with families affected by substance use in rural West Virginia.

Our findings show the commitment of rural service providers to enhance their competencies through the IMPACT WV training portal. It highlights the need for adaptive educational strategies to align with participant feedback, ultimately aiming to improve service provider knowledge, service delivery, and outcomes for families facing substance use disorders in rural communities.

Huge congratulations to the amazing staff and collaborators whose dedication and hard work made this publication possible! Your passion for improving rural health education and support has made a meaningful contribution to the field!

We're sharing another article today about the intersection of Black history and people with disabilities. The disability rights movement gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, using the guiding principles of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

As this article by the Legal Defense Fund points out, disability rights activists like Judy Heumann and Ed Roberts were influenced by civil rights movement ideas of collective action, peaceful protest, and civil disobedience to challenge systemic barriers that kept people with disabilities from being included in society.

The disability rights movement was successful in helping to pass several important pieces of legislature to improve the lives of people with disabilities, namely the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Olmstead Act passed in 1999, which affirms the right of people with disabilities to live in community settings vs. institutions.
