Physicians and researchers at the WVU Cancer Institute are leading a first-in-the-world clinical trial that has already delivered extraordinary results, with the first treated patient achieving complete remission after just one cycle of therapy for an ultra-rare leukemia.

For patients facing limited options, moments like this represent more than progress in a journal. They mean time, possibility, and renewed hope.

We’re grateful to the teams advancing innovative treatments close to home and to the patients who place their trust in clinical research.

A WVU Cancer Institute team has achieved a global medical first in a clinical trial examining the efficacy of subcutaneous blinatumomab in treating one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of leukemia.

This National Donor Day, we’re sharing a powerful reminder of how one decision can save a life.

When Tyler Skidmore, M.D., a neurologist at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals, signed up as an organ donor years ago, he never imagined he would one day be waiting for a kidney of his own. After being diagnosed with a rare genetic kidney disease, he spent nearly a year balancing full-time patient care with nightly dialysis, until a life-changing call came from the WVU Medicine Transplant Alliance at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

On Nov. 14, 2025, he received the gift of life.

Today, Dr. Skidmore is recovering well and looking forward to returning to the patients he cares for — deeply grateful to the donor and family who made his second chance possible.

More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for an organ transplant. One registration can save multiple lives.

Read his full story and learn how you can register as an organ donor below.

Tyler Skidmore, M.D., learned the importance of organ donation early in life.

Through WVU Medicine's Soup for the Soul program, patients like Judy McNair receive more than lunch during infusion visits, they receive comfort, compassion, and a reminder that their community is standing with them.

Made possible by generous donors, this effort has provided thousands of meals over the past decade, easing the burden for patients and families when it matters most. It’s one small way we work to support the whole person throughout their cancer journey.

Read Judy's story below.

Over her two-decade battle with cancer, Judy McNair has maintained a positive outlook and cheerful disposition, relying on her faith and those around her to help her on her journey.
