Energy Express

Energy Express is a free, six-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children 1st-6th grade living in West Virginia. The answer: Energy Express

This program aims to improve and/or maintain reading levels through creative uses of books, art, drama and vocabulary. During the summer many children lose academic skills. Without school breakfast and lunch, many children lose nutritional well-being. Many children have few structured learning opportunities. Summer learning and nutritional losses are greater for children living in rural and low-income communities. Children living in rural and low-income communities often fall behind during the summer months, starting each school year behind where they were the previous spring. Successive summers of limited learning opportunities may cause children to fall below grade level by the end of elementary school—putting them further and further behind more privileged peers.

Afterschool Alliance brief highlights powerful national findings:

💙 Students in afterschool programs showed stronger interpersonal skills, better mental health, and positive identity development.

Districts across the country are seeing results when they invest in programs that combine academics with enrichment. Three-quarters of students who attended most of their summer program showed no learning loss over the break!

🌞 Summer learning builds more than academics!
A new 2025 meta-analysis published in Science Direct finds that summer learning programs can positively impact students’ social-emotional and behavioral development — not just reading and math skills.

Programs that include intentional social-emotional learning (SEL) activities, ensure consistent attendance, and provide high-quality, engaging experiences show the strongest outcomes. Researchers found that even modest gains in areas like self-regulation, teamwork, and confidence can make a meaningful difference for children’s long-term success.
