We asked our therapist Avery for some tips about staying connected with others this season.

"Social connection is crucial for mental health, especially throughout the winter months. Some ways to stay connected to your social circle may include scheduling check-ins with friends or family regularly, participating in community events or groups, and reaching out for additional mental health resources. "

If you're seeking additional support and are interested in therapy, please contact WVSL Behavioral Health at 304-413-4301.

Finances can cause significant stress, especially during the holiday season. No matter what causes it, the stress of not knowing whether we can meet financial obligations, for ourselves and sometimes for others, can really take a toll on our mental health. Here are some things that we can do to manage this stress in a healthy way:

💛Embrace Connection with Others
When we’re struggling financially it’s tempting to want to pull away and minimize the challenge. Not having money to spend on socializing and/or feeling shame or embarrassment about our situation can make even admitting that we need help challenging. Our best resource, however, is other people.

🩶Manage Emotional Triggers
Identify triggers for impulse purchases. You’d be surprised how easy it is to pick up small things you don’t need, so ensuring you’ve budgeted for it, and tracked it will really help curtail that unnecessary spending.

💛Seek Support
Sometimes exploring our relationship with money may feel EXTRA stressful during the holiday season. You are not alone. If you are seeking financial assistance and are in West Virginia, dialing 2-1-1 is a direct line to resources near you.

If you're seeking additional support and are interested in therapy, please contact WVSL Behavioral Health at 304-413-4301.

"Having the opportunity to work in unison with participants in our recovery housing program has been one of the most rewarding experiences and is something I’m proud to get up and do everyday," says Kenneth Dawson, a Peer Recovery Support Specialist in Recovery Housing in Morgantown.

"Sharing victories, overcoming struggles, and becoming part of their journey is something that motivates me to be the best version of myself. WVSL lays the framework to transform the lives of individuals struggling with SUD and it’s an honor to be a link in the chain of recovery."

Our Story | WVSL

A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER & PRESIDENT, DOUG LEECH

Substance use disorders have become so prevalent in West Virginia and have affected so many families. West Virginia Sober Living has been instrumental in offering structure and support for those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction in our region. We have formed a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, West Virginia Sober Living, Inc., that is designed to reintegrate recovering individuals back into the community.

Men and women residents in the program live with us for a period of six to 12 months and will begin to develop strong relationships and demonstrate transparency in their daily lives as they maintain accountability to the group. The West Virginia Sober Living program is centered on the principles of 12 Steps. Through the program, residents will gain independence and responsibility, both financially and emotionally, as they become the person they want to be, which is the ultimate goal. West Virginia Sober Living provides a safe, caring and supportive environment for residents to begin living a sober lifestyle and developing healthy new relationships in the region’s active recovery community.

We accommodate individuals that have been through primary treatment and desire a sober living environment as they progress in their recovery. Residents are expected to remain drug and alcohol free, actively participate in a 12-step recovery program and work, volunteer or be enrolled in school full-time.
