We are pleased to introduce the new WVSHA President, Dr. Tori Gilbert.
Dr. Tori Gilbert graduated with her Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from WVU in 2014 and completed her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology degree from Northwestern University in 2021. Her doctoral work supported her passion for education and mentorship within the field of speech-language pathology. She currently serves as the President for the West Virginia Speech-Language-Hearing Association (WVSHA) after serving as the VP of Convention Planning for 2 years, and is on the Board of Trustees for the West Virginia Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.
She previously worked as the Education Coordinator and Clinic Director of the Communication Access and Assistive Technology (CAAT) clinic at the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED) and was an assistant professor for Disability Studies within the School of Medicine Department of Human Performance. Before working for the WVU CED, Dr. Gilbert was the Coordinator of Clinical Education in Communication Sciences and Disorders for WVU, where she was responsible for educating master’s level speech-language pathology students related to clinical practice as well as providing leadership and support for supervisors and mentors. She was also an Assistant Professor at West Liberty University, where she designed the master’s level curriculum for their speech-language pathology program. Initially, Dr. Gilbert began her speech-language pathology career as a school-based speech-language pathologist in Marshall County, West Virginia.
Dr. Gilbert specializes in clinical care for speech sound disorders (articulation and phonological), apraxia of speech, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Her practice approach encompasses team-based service provision with an emphasis on collaborating with the client’s care team (client, caregivers, therapists, educators, physicians, etc.). True to her passion for mentorship, she enjoys training other professionals and parents/caregivers on communication tools to best support children in all environments.
With her deep commitment to clinical excellence, education, and service, Dr. Gilbert brings a strong and visionary voice to WVSHA. We are confident that under her leadership, our organization will continue to grow, advocate, and advance the field for professionals and the communities we serve.
