Audiologist or Hearing Instrument Specialist?
Why Choosing a Doctor of Audiology Matters
I became a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) because I am passionate about helping people hear, connect, and engage with the world around them. Every day, I see how better hearing transforms lives — from enjoying conversation with loved ones to staying safe and confident in daily activities.
Becoming an audiologist isn’t just about learning to fit hearing aids. It takes years of advanced education and hands-on clinical training. After earning a bachelor’s degree, I completed a four-year doctoral program that included in-depth studies in hearing science, anatomy, physiology, balance, and auditory processing, as well as extensive clinical rotations. I’ve spent hundreds of hours diagnosing and managing all types of hearing and balance disorders, not just fitting devices.
While anyone can technically “press buttons and match a target,” an audiologist has the science, anatomy, and clinical background to truly understand how specific hearing aid adjustments affect each individual patient. We consider not only the unique anatomy of each ear, but also the degree and configuration of hearing loss, cognitive function, and communication goals, to ensure the device is optimized for real-world hearing, not just a test booth.
By contrast, a hearing instrument dispenser typically completes a state-required exam and may have minimal clinical training. They cannot treat tinnitus, evaluate balance, or fit hearing aids on children, and they do not have the same broad understanding of the complex auditory system or the science behind hearing loss and communication challenges.
Choosing an audiologist means choosing a professional who can:
Accurately diagnose the cause of hearing loss
Evaluate balance and dizziness issues
Manage tinnitus and auditory processing problems
Customize hearing solutions based on your unique needs
Fit hearing aids for patients of all ages, including children
Provide ongoing care and support for long-term hearing health
When it comes to your hearing — one of the most important senses for safety, connection, and quality of life — your choice of provider matters. As an audiologist, my goal isn’t just to sell a device; it’s to use my training and expertise to make a real difference in your life.
Your hearing deserves more than a quick device sale — it deserves a doctor-level professional.
