One thing as a longtime astrologer and writer (something since Chat GPT and AI that I have given up, due to a flooding of the market) I am always amazed by the amount of misinformation perpetuated by social media.

The following by Danielle Blackwood is a pertinent example (and some great historical references) that made me smile.

The “Lion's Gate Portal": New Age hype or real astrology?

Well, it's that time of year again! 🙂

The internet will be abuzz over the next few days with headlines on the so called “Lion’s Gate Portal” - a pseudo-astrological term coined by someone in 1998 meant to speak to a one time event in August of that year.

In 1998 a lunar eclipse occurred on August 8th followed by a Solar eclipse on August 21st, and the Sun was of course in the sign of Leo, as it is during that timeframe. Hence, the “Lions Gate” reference.

There’s a reason that you won’t see serious astrologers writing about the astrology of “The Lion’s Gate Portal”, and that’s because it’s not actually astrology.

It was hyperbole then, and it’s hyperbole now.

This article re-surfaced around 2017 and hit the internet, picking up new age vernacular like a cosmic game of telephone gone awry.

You may read that this is when the Sun and the star Sirius align, but the heliacal rise of Sirius can take place at any time between July and the end of August.

You may also read that it’s an ancient portal, aligned with the numerology of 8/8. Alas this too has no basis in fact.

Western astrology emerged in Mesopotamia around 5000 years ago, and they didn’t have an “8th month”, or an “8th day” of that month, and they certainly didn’t use the Gregorian calendar!

If you want to observe August 8th as a special day, enjoy! Just know where it comes from and how it evolved.

HOWEVER, without all the buzzwords, hype, and need to create grist for the almighty content mill that is social media, when the Sun reaches 15 degrees of Leo we have a true seasonal portal, an actual seasonal midpoint.

The Sun travels through 15 degrees of Leo today starting its journey through this pivotal degree at 10:52 pm (PT) today, August 6th.

This means we are at the actual midpoint between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox.

15 degrees of the fixed signs marks a true seasonal portal, and 15 degrees of Leo is sometimes referred to as 'True Lammas'.

The Sun at 15 degrees Leo is a genuinely powerful, magical day – it is the heart of the heart of summer. We can align with this moment to create intentions that have true staying power based on timing that is real and measurable.

There's more than enough real magic and mystery in the world.
And in true Leo style, that’s something to celebrate!
