This Movember, let’s raise awareness for men’s health, particularly focusing on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer stands as the leading cancer in men, with around 180,000 new cases diagnosed yearly in the United States. Shockingly, about 90% of men with advanced prostate cancer will experience bone metastases.

Consider a scenario where a 65-year-old male battles advanced prostate cancer leading to extensive bone metastases, notably affecting his left acetabular area. The treatment journey involved tumor removal, utilizing an extensive acetabular cage, and a long stem total hip replacement. Bone cement played a crucial role in stabilizing the cage and filling the defect.

The statistics reveal the harsh reality faced by patients with bone metastases. Only 3% of individuals diagnosed with this condition are alive after 5 years. For those developing bone metastases post-initial treatment, the 5-year survival rate hovers around 35%.

The challenges associated with bone metastases are immense, encompassing severe pain, fractures, immobility, and hypercalcemia. Treatment strategies often involve a multidisciplinary approach, including surgical interventions, hormone therapy, bisphosphonates, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Early detection and continuous monitoring play pivotal roles in managing these cases effectively, potentially reducing the need for extensive surgeries and improving outcomes for individuals facing this challenging diagnosis. Let’s spread awareness and support initiatives that aid in the early identification and comprehensive care of prostate cancer patients with bone metastases.

Couldn’t be more delighted than to run into a friend, colleague and mentor, Dr Sam Kenan who was one of NYCs top orthopedic oncologists for many, many years at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases when I first started my practice in the early 2000s. Dr. Kenan and I worked together for many years at NYU and Mount Sinai. He was always supportive and I learned a lot from him during our many weekly conferences. It was nice reminiscing about all our cases and multidisciplinary meetings with pathologists Gerry Steiner, MD, Panna Desai, MD and Luigi’s Abromovici as well as musculoskeletal radiologists George Nomikos, MD, Mahvash Rafii, MD, Leon Rybak, MD and Zehava Rosenberg, MD. An amazing multidisciplinary team. Serious about learning but having fun while doing it. All of us passionate about musculoskeletal tumors. Forever grateful for these early relationships and educational experiences as well as sharing if information early in my career.
