Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement — What Vermonters Should Know for 2026
As the 2026 Medicare is roughly midway, many Vermonters are re-evaluating their coverage — especially with Vermont Blue Advantage and UnitedHealthcare leaving the market and Humana being the only Medicare Advantage option in much of the state.
Here’s what you should know 👇
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Combines hospital, medical, and prescription drug coverage into one plan.
Often a low or $0 premium, but you’ll pay copays and out-of-pocket costs when you use care.
Network restrictions apply — Dartmouth Health is not in Humana’s network, which can mean higher costs if you continue with those providers along with issues if a claim is denied.
Benefits and costs can change yearly.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
No provider networks — you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare nationwide.
Predictable, stable coverage from year to year.
A High-Deductible Plan G with Mutual of Omaha $52.25/month is an excellent choice, offering strong protection against large, unexpected bills with a manageable deductible. Or pay a little more with a plan N or (regular) G for less exposure.
Throw in a low-cost Part D drug plan — such as WellCare Value Script at about $16.40/month — and you have a very affordable package that provides true flexibility and peace of mind.
The Bottom Line
A “zero-premium” Advantage plan can sound appealing, but it can also lead to higher costs later if your doctors aren’t in-network or your care needs change.
A Supplement plus Part D gives you freedom, stability, and control — and for many, the monthly cost is surprisingly affordable.
