Meet Mike Bodnar, one of our total knee replacement patients.

Before surgery, Mike was understandably nervous, but the care team at Cary Orthopaedics answered every question, explained every step, and built the trust he needed to move forward with confidence.

Mike’s recovery exceeded expectations: walking with a cane by week two and without one by week four. Just a few months later, he’s back to his favorite activities and already planning his next fishing trip.

We’re thrilled to see Mike moving with ease again—living life on his own terms. 💪

Back with our Q&A series! Straight talk, expert insights, and answers you can trust—from the physicians at Cary Orthopaedics.

Q: Why does my knee make a popping sound when I bend it?

A: That sound you hear is called crepitus. In many cases, it’s harmless, caused by gas bubbles that form and collapse inside the knee or tendons sliding over bony surfaces.

However, if it is accompanied by pain, swelling, or stiffness, it could be a sign of cartilage wear, a meniscus tear, or another problem that needs a closer look. When in doubt, it’s best to get it evaluated by an orthopedic specialist.

Let’s see how much you know about orthopedic care! Can you guess the treatment described below?

Here’s the clue:
Orthopedic doctors use it to provide temporary pain relief, reduce inflammation, and sometimes, delay the need for surgery.

💉 It doesn’t cure the condition, but it can make movement easier.
💉 It’s most often injected into joints in combination with an anesthetic.
💉 It provides significant pain relief, lasting for weeks or even months.

Christopher, thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad to hear that you felt at ease, supported, and confident throughout your journey with us. Your recommendation is the highest form of compliment we could ever receive!

“From beginning to end, the doctor gave me the care and attention I needed. I have an anxiety disorder, but he was able to put me at ease pre- and post-surgery. I believe he did an excellent job with my hip replacement. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering this surgery or any surgery he’s capable of. Great experience all around. 10/10.” – Christopher W.

Strong bones + healthy joints = unstoppable YOU! Here’s how you can stay strong, active, and limber in your 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond:

1️⃣ Do weight-bearing exercises like hiking or stair climbing to keep your bones strong.
2️⃣ Fuel your body with foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3s to nourish your bones and fight joint inflammation.
3️⃣ Maintain a healthy weight to protect your weight-bearing joints, such as your hips, knees, and ankles, from stress.
4️⃣ Stay active daily. Even light movement can stimulate your bone-forming cells to build more bone tissue and improve joint flexibility.

Dealing with persistent joint pain or need guidance on improving your musculoskeletal health? Partner with one of our bone and joint experts here at Cary Orthopaedics. Call (919) 573-4825.

Knee pain throwing off your rhythm? When you visit one of our orthopedic specialists, help us help you by showing up with “STAR” power:

S – Spot it: Pinpoint the location of the pain.
T – Track the timeline: Tell us how long it has been going on and what started it.
A – Assess it: Give us an idea about how bad it is. (Use the pain scale 0-10.)
R – Reveal it: Describe what it feels like (i.e., Does it throb, burn, or ache?) and what makes it better or worse.

Don’t forget to mention any accompanying symptoms, such as swelling, stiffness, weakness, numbness, or if the pain is sporadic or constant. Remember, the more details you share, the more capable we are of providing the care you need to get back on your feet.

And here we are again with our Q&A series – serving up straight-to-the-point insights from our physicians here at Cary Orthopaedics.

Q: Why does my hip click or snap when I walk or twist—and why does my groin hurt after workouts?
A: You may have what’s known as snapping hip syndrome (SHS). It happens when a tendon or muscle glides over a bony ridge in the hip. SHS is common in dancers and athletes—but it can affect anyone. While it’s often harmless, it’s worth getting checked if there’s persistent pain involved.

Did you know your spine starts aging long before you do? Thirty percent of people under 35 already have some degree of disc degeneration, and many of them don’t even realize it. By age 60, more than 90% of people will show evidence of disc degeneration.

Whether you’re approaching midlife or well into your golden years, don’t ignore lingering or persistent back pain, especially if it’s radiating or accompanied by numbness or paresthesia (tingling). Left untreated, degenerative disc disease can lead to debilitating pain and other problems that can affect your mobility and quality of life.
