Good Shepherd Clinic

Good Shepherd Clinic Good Shepherd Clinic provides free primary care services to uninsured residents of Clayton County, GA with limited financial resources.

Dr. Thomas Kelley and Rev. Dr. Jimmy Lewis came together with a vision that all Clayton County residents should have access to quality medical care without consideration for their ability to pay. In September of 2000 the Good Shepherd Clinic was born, with Dr. Kelly providing simple acute medical care one evening a week. In the 21 years since its opening, the Clinic has been able to grow to provide free medical care to thousands of Clayton County residents. Good Shepherd Clinic is now open three days a week, staffed primarily by medical and administrative volunteers, and has the capacity to see upwards of 3000 patient encounters per year. In addition to acute care, the clinic now primarily acts as a healthcare home to its many patients providing ongoing healthcare for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and COPD. In addition to medical care, Good Shepherd Clinic provides an array of Health Education classes, and works to provide patients with prescription assistance.

Awardee Spotlight: Volunteer of the Year

We have over 1,000 amazing volunteers, but each year we recognize a few of them for their exceptional service to our clients. This year, PBPA recognized Phil Cooper as a Volunteer of the Year. Phil, a corporate partner at Nelson Mullins, worked many hours to assist Urban Health & Wellness Clinic in their acquisition of Good Shepherd Clinic. Assisted by his colleagues, Phil drafted the transaction documents and pushed the transaction forward through months of complications to a successful closing in December.

Thank you, Phil, and congratulations!

Volunteers like Phil help us achieve our mission of strengthening nonprofits across Georgia through their dedication to sharing their time and expertise. We are thrilled to announce that Susan Whatley, MSN, APRN, FNP-C has been selected as Health Equity Leader of the Year at the 2026 Health Care Champion Awards, presented by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The Health Care Champion Awards honor frontline health care heroes alongside some of the industry’s most innovative and influential leaders.

This recognition comes at a particularly meaningful time, as our organization celebrates 10 years of service, beginning this April. For a decade, the clinic, under Susan's leadership, has remained committed to advancing health equity and expanding access to quality care in our community.

Congratulations to Susan for this well-deserved honor!

Thank you to Emily McLeod with CBS Atlanta for visiting our Good Shepherd location this week!

We are proud to stand alongside other free and charitable clinics across the state to raise awareness and support through the Georgia Charitable Care Network “Compassion Heals” campaign. Together, we are helping ensure that more Georgians have access to the care they need.

Our clinic, part of the Georgia Charitable Care Network, is now part of a statewide “Compassion Heals” marketing campaign! With branding on billboards (you might even recognize one of the faces 😉), radio ads, and digital marketing, we are working to raise awareness about the need to bridge a critical gap in healthcare for the more than 1.2 million Georgians who lack health insurance.

The GCCN’s network of free and charitable clinics restores dignity, compassion, and fairness to the healthcare experience by treating every patient as a person of worth. Help our clinic thrive by donating today - urbanclinic.org/donate.
