At Georgia South Family Medicine Residency Program, we believe education is one of the most powerful tools in improving maternal health outcomes.

Black women in the United States are more than 2-3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes and face significantly higher rates of complications. These statistics are real, but they are not unchangeable. Many of these outcomes are preventable with early care, patient education, and access to the right resources!

Through our residency program, we are committed to training the next generation of physicians to deliver compassionate, informed, and equitable care. By equipping our residents with the knowledge, awareness, and skills to better support black mothers, we can help reduce disparities and improve outcomes for families in our community.

Because when mothers are informed, supported, and heard, healthier futures begin

MSK ultrasound allows real-time evaluation of muscles, joints, and tendons-improving diagnosis, guiding procedures, and enhancing the accuracy of targeted injections๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿ’‰

Our faculty and staff had the incredible opportunity to attend the AAFP Conference in Dallas, Texas, where we engaged in meaningful discussions, innovative workshops, and collaborative sessions focused on the future of Family Medicine!

This experience allowed us to bring back new ideas, strengthened perspectives, and valuable strategies that will help us continue building a supportive culture within our residency program while advancing the education and growth of our Family Medicine residents. We are excited to implement what we learned and remain committed to shaping the next generation of compassionate, skilled physicians๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿฉบ

Dr. Dylan Patel, a PGY-1 Resident here at Georgia South Family Medicine, shares insight on asthma

Asthma is a long-term condition that affects the airways, the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When these airways get irritated, they swell and tighten, making it harder to breathe.

-Wheezing
-Coughing
-Chest tightness
-Shortness of breath

-Heavy pollen seasons
-Exercise
-Cigarette smoke
-Colds
-Frequent coughing at night or early in the morning

-Premature infants
-Children with allergies
-Those with a family history
-Adults who smoke or who are regularly around secondhand smoke

These occur when the airways become even more swollen and filled with mucus, making breathing much more difficult. Signs that an attack is getting serious include:

-Fast breathing
-Struggling to speak in full sentences
-Chest or stomach pulling in with each breath
-A child appearing unusually tired or panicked
