Delta Health Center was established in 1965 and is the oldest Federally Qualified Health Center in the United States and is the birthplace of the nation’s community health center movement. Its mission is to provide comprehensive, high quality, preventive and primary healthcare and other enabling services in a respectful, culturally sensitive manner, regardless of ability to pay. Jack Geiger Delta Health Center and the Warren Inge Dental Clinic in Mound Bayou, Delta Health Center currently operates satellite clinics throughout a five county area, including DHC Searcy Medical Center - Cleveland, DHC Indianola, DHC Moorhead, DHC Greenville Central, DHC Greenville South, DHC Hollandale, DHC Rolling Fork, and DHC Mayersville. Delta Health Center offers comprehensive medical care, including Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), Internal Medicine, dental and oral health services, diabetes management, diagnostic services with laboratory and radiology, social services, Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC), Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) services, family planning, immunizations, Perinatal High Risk Management Infant Services System (PHRM/ISS), nutrition and pharmacy services, to over 10,000 patients annually. Delta Health Center accepts private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and Chips, and provides all services on a discounted sliding fee scale.

This week, Delta Health Center’s Community Advisory Council at Leland hosted the Mississippi Center for Justice at its monthly meeting to review Medicaid redetermination and expansion and what it means for patients in the Mississippi Delta.

November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes health problems. 💉

A recent report released by Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock of Georgia (D-GA), and Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana (R-LA) shed light on Insulin Deserts and called for lowering the cost of Insulin for all. This report names Mississippi, as the state with the most Insulin Deserts across the United States.

🏥The State of Mississippi has 95.2% of the uninsured population living in an Insulin Desert.
🏥The state of Mississippi currently has 75 identified Insulin deserts.
🏥The National Diabetes rate is 11.3% of the US population.
🏥The State of Mississippi’s National diabetes rate is 14.4%.
🏥Bolivar County has 17.8% of adults diagnosed with diabetes
🏥Sunflower County has 16.4% of adults diagnosed with diabetes
🏥Washington County has 21.3% of adults diagnosed with diabetes

Americans with private insurance or Medicare pay an average of $63 per fill of insulin while uninsured Americans pay an average of $123 per fill. The state of Mississippi has not implemented a State-Level Insulin co-pay cap, which means more out-of-pocket costs for Mississippi residents.
