I remember my first CrossFit class. As the time limit got closer I was the only one left rowing, and a bunch of strangers were around me cheering me on, as if my struggle meant as much to them as it did to me. On day one I felt like I belonged to something, and those people are now friends of mine. I look forward to every class not just for the accomplishment I feel afterward, but for the time I get to spend with people that continue to encourage me to keep at it.
When I first started, I thought I wouldn't be able to do most of the exercises in the workouts. Everything had a scaled down option that I could do though, and seeing myself gradually move on to harder variations and continually improve has been a great motivator to keep at it. I now run, do box jumps, burpees, pushups, and I'm getting closer to being able to do pull ups. I couldn't do any of this before starting. I'm getting stronger, and I've gone down four shirt sizes.
Katlin is one of the best coaches you could ask for. She has a wealth of knowledge, and I feel like I can come to her with any questions I have. When I doubt myself she pushes me to keep trying. When I push too hard she lets me fail, and then makes sure I know what I did wrong. I was lifting before I started CrossFit, but I just saw myself as an unhealthy guy who was trying to get into shape. She treats me more like an experienced athlete who is struggling because I'm trying new things, and it has helped to give me a more positive self image. I think she cares about us all more than she lets on.
