Your heart health is a team effort! While Cardiologists specialize in heart health, your Primary Care Provider is often the first line of defense in monitoring and diagnosing risks for heart disease.

As Ashley Bryant, FNP-C at Northern Family Medicine, explains: "Annual screening labs, including cholesterol levels, are essential for identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Elevated cholesterol often has no symptoms, so patients may feel well despite increased risk."

Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Schedule your annual wellness check today! 🩺

Northern Regional Hospital is excited to introduce expanded Vascular Access services!

PICC and Midline catheters provide access to a large vein, allowing more comfortable administration of medications that may irritate smaller veins, and potentially reducing the need for multiple needle sticks.

Our expert Vascular Access Team specializes in safe and efficient PICC line and midline insertions for both inpatient and outpatient care, ensuring optimal treatment for patients requiring intravenous therapies.

If you are in need of Vascular Access services, speak to your doctor or visit choosenorthern.org/vascular-access to learn more!

Meet the Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation team! 💓

Cameron Taylor, Exercise Physiologist at Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation, has been with the practice for four years, working closely with the care team to support patients as they rebuild strength and confidence. "My main focus is developing and supervising safe, individualized exercise programs for cardiac rehab patients while monitoring vital signs and exercise response," he said.

Patients are typically surprised to learn how individualized Cardiac Rehab is to them. "It isn't a generic workout—it’s tailored to each patient’s condition, goals, and progress, with close medical oversight."

"The thing I enjoy the most about what I do is helping patients overcome fear and regain trust in their bodies after a cardiac event. Seeing their confidence and physical capacity improve over time is very rewarding," said Cameron.

To keep your heart healthy, Cameron's advice is to "Focus on consistency. Regular movement and healthy daily habits matter more than occasional intense efforts."

This drill was a full-scale community drill involving multiple agencies across the county, including the NRH Emergency Department, NRH Emergency Management, Surry County Emergency Management, Surry County Emergency Services, and the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center.

Thank you to everyone involved for making this drill as realistic and effective as possible, and a special thanks to Adamari, our "patient", who volunteered her time this morning.

Meet the Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation team! 💓

Elijah Russell, Exercise Physiologist at Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation, has been with the practice for five years.

Elijah plays an important role in each patient's treatment, determining what types of exercises are appropriate based on the patient's medical history and other health factors. "The goal of treatment is to increase the strength of the heart, so that patients can return to completing their 'activities of daily living' (ADLs) more easily; simple tasks like getting dressed, taking a shower, and washing dishes."

While he enjoys the technical aspect of his job very much, forming relationships with patients is Elijah's favorite part of his day. "Because we see the same patients for 4-5 months, 2-3 times a week, you really get to know them. You learn their interests and can really form a bond that only helps with their care. Being able to joke with patients and bring a light-hearted energy only helps them to be more comfortable while they are here, which leads to more positive results."
