Martha T. Berry Foundation The future of Martha T. Berry, MCF is tied to the generosity of the individuals closest to it. HISTORY OF MARTHA T. BERRY MEDICAL CARE FACILITY

Dr. Henry G.

We all want the assurance that the very best health care will be available when our family, our friends, or we ourselves need it. Berry and the people of our community have played a
major role in helping Macomb County’s own Martha T. Berry Medical
Care Facility evolve from a humble, 100-bed hospital to a
beautifully renovated,state-of-the-art, 217-bed skilled nursing
facility. Martha T. Berry is proud to be considered a “safety net”
within the community because of the care provided to vulnerable
residents who might not otherwise be able to afford skilled nursing
services. The majority of funding the facility receives for patient
care comes directly from Medicaid.

🌿 BIG things are growing at Martha T. Berry Medical Facility and we're so excited to share this with you.

Meet the Courtyard Renovation Project — a collaboration between the Mount Clemens Beautification Committee, the Martha T. Berry Foundation, and the Detroit Collaborative Design Center to transform our courtyard into a truly healing space for our residents.

But why does a garden matter so much?
The American Society of Landscape Architects sponsored research on "Therapeutic Site Design" and its effects on human health. Dr. Joanne Westphal — a landscape architect AND physician — studied green spaces at an Alzheimer's unit and found something remarkable:

✅ Patients who spent more than 10 minutes per visit in a garden space showed marked improvements in behavior, pulse rate, blood pressure, and even weight.

And that's just the beginning. Here's what a beautiful courtyard space means for OUR residents and community:

🌱 A welcoming environment where families and residents can visit and socialize together
🌱 A calming, stress-reducing space for residents facing a procedure or a difficult day
🌱 A sanctuary for grieving or worried residents and staff who need a quiet moment
🌱 A chance for residents of all mobility levels to get their hands back in the soil — something so many of our MTB residents knew well in their lives before coming here 💚
🌱 And here's something truly special about Martha T. Berry: what grows in our courtyard can go straight to our scratch kitchen — and onto residents' plates at every meal.

This project holds so much potential — and it belongs to this community.
If you'd like to be part of making it happen, please consider a donation of any amount. Every contribution is 100% tax-deductible and goes directly toward the Courtyard Renovation Project.

Stay tuned — more details, more updates, and some very exciting reveals are coming soon! Donate to👉 marthatberryfoundation.org with a note that it is for the project!

🐾 Martha’s Mutts Puppy Love Social is already bringing joy to residents and second chances to shelter dogs. ❤️

Last month, the first Martha’s Mutts event kicked off with a Valentine’s Day theme at the Martha T. Berry Medical Care Facility in Mount Clemens. The new program — a partnership between Macomb County Animal Control, Martha T. Berry Medical Care Facility, and the Martha T. Berry Foundation — was created to strengthen connection, community, and emotional well-being through animal interaction.

During the first event, 15–20 residents spent time with adoptable dogs from the county shelter, sharing smiles, cuddles, and unforgettable moments.

And the impact is already being felt — three of the dogs that attended have since been adopted. 🐶💛

As Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel shared, programs like this bring meaningful moments of connection that benefit both seniors and animals in our community.

Our Foundation Chair Karen Bathanti said it best:
“The smiles we saw today reinforced what we already believed: positive moments, comfort and companionship can come from unexpected and wonderfully furry places.”

Martha’s Mutts shows the beautiful symmetry of community — residents who have found a home at Martha T. Berry helping shelter dogs find homes of their own.

We’re so grateful for the partners, volunteers, and community members who make programs like this possible.

This year, we’re spotlighting the dedicated individuals who serve and support the mission of the Martha T. Berry Foundation and sharing their “WHY.”

Today, we’re honored to recognize Kevin W. Evans, the Executive Director of Martha T. Berry.

Kevin’s passion for senior care began long before his professional career. At just twelve years old, he volunteered as a candy striper at a skilled nursing facility where his mother served as Director of Nursing. The meaningful conversations he had with residents during that time left a lasting impression and sparked a lifelong commitment to serving seniors.

Licensed as a nursing home administrator since 1997, Kevin has spent decades working in long-term care through roles as a consultant, medical supply representative, and director of quality before eventually becoming administrator. Nearly a decade ago, he came to Macomb County as an interim administrator at Martha T. Berry — but the dedication and passion of the staff convinced him to stay.

Today, Kevin serves as CEO/Administrator and Executive Director of the Foundation, helping guide initiatives that improve the lives of vulnerable seniors in our community. Under the leadership of Board Chair Karen Bathanti and the dedicated board members, the Foundation has grown significantly, expanding its fundraising efforts and impact through creative community events and continued advocacy.

Kevin’s story reflects what Martha T. Berry is all about — listening, caring, and creating a place where seniors are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

✨ Follow along as we continue sharing the stories and “why” behind the incredible people who help make Martha T. Berry such a special place.

This year, we’re spotlighting the incredible individuals who serve on the Martha T. Berry Foundation Board and sharing their “WHY.”

Today, we’re proud to feature board member Tricia Haener.

"I serve because I believe deeply in the organization’s mission and its commitment to improving lives through compassion, dignity, and opportunity. The work of Martha T. Berry aligns closely with my own values as a healthcare leader: advocating for vulnerable populations, ensuring access to essential resources, and supporting people through some of their most difficult moments.

Professionally, I have spent my career focused on quality, safety, and equitable care. Serving on this board allows me to extend that commitment beyond my hospital role and into the community in a more direct and lasting way. Most importantly, I serve because I believe that leadership comes with a responsibility to give back. Being part of Martha T. Berry allows me to do that in a way that is both purposeful and impactful."

Tricia’s dedication to quality, safety, and equitable care strengthens our mission and reflects the values we strive to uphold every day. Her leadership mindset — grounded in responsibility and service — helps ensure that our residents receive not only essential support, but compassionate and dignified care.

Follow along as we continue introducing our board members and sharing why they choose to serve — and how their leadership helps the elders at Martha T. Berry live with respect, care, and opportunity.
