Martha T. Berry Foundation The future of Martha T. Berry, MCF is tied to the generosity of the individuals closest to it. HISTORY OF MARTHA T. BERRY MEDICAL CARE FACILITY

Dr. Henry G.

We all want the assurance that the very best health care will be available when our family, our friends, or we ourselves need it. Berry and the people of our community have played a
major role in helping Macomb County’s own Martha T. Berry Medical
Care Facility evolve from a humble, 100-bed hospital to a
beautifully renovated,state-of-the-art, 217-bed skilled nursing
facility. Martha T. Berry is proud to be considered a “safety net”
within the community because of the care provided to vulnerable
residents who might not otherwise be able to afford skilled nursing
services. The majority of funding the facility receives for patient
care comes directly from Medicaid.

This year, we’re shining a light on the people who help guide our mission — our Board — and sharing their “why” for serving the Martha T. Berry Foundation.
We’re honored to begin with our Board Chair, Karen Bathanti.

"A verse from Luke has always resonated deeply with me:
“For everyone to whom much is given, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked.”

I take those words to heart. I have been richly blessed—with love, friendship, health, opportunity, and the ability to serve others. And I believe those blessings come with responsibility.

My passion for this work isn’t just professional; it’s spiritual. I believe we are called to care for those who once cared for us. And I believe each of you feels that same calling—that’s why this facility thrives, why our board came alive, and why the men & women who call Martha T Berry home are living their best lives!"

Karen’s leadership, heart, and sense of purpose help shape the care, compassion, and community felt throughout Martha T. Berry every day. Thank you for being our trusted leader in all of our efforts.

✨ Follow along as we introduce the rest of our board members and share why they choose to serve — and why this work matters so deeply to them and to the elders who call Martha T. Berry home.

💚Why Your Gift Matters in 2026 💚

Medicaid covers medical care.
It does not cover basic essentials.

Our elders receive the clinical care they need — but the moments that make life meaningful are made possible only through private donations.

Medicaid doesn’t fund:
• Enrichment programs
• Music, art, and social connection
• Pet visits, celebrations, and special experiences
• One-on-one moments that bring comfort, purpose, and joy

That’s where the Foundation — and you — come in.

Your gift supports the difference between simply being cared for…
and truly living.

It funds laughter.
Connection.
Dignity.
And the quality-of-life moments our elders deserve in every season of life.

As we look ahead to 2026, your generosity ensures that care is paired with compassion — and that no elder is forgotten beyond their medical needs.

✨ Give today.
✨ Change a life.
✨ Help us make 2026 a year filled with meaning, joy, and connection.

🌟 Volunteer of the Year Honoree: Celeste Triner 🌟

For more than five years, Celeste Triner has been an extraordinary source of compassion, comfort, and spiritual support within the Martha T. Berry community. Through countless volunteer hours, she has brought consistency and care to residents by coordinating religious services and meaningful moments of connection—always honoring each individual, regardless of faith.

Celeste faithfully organizes weekly Mass, seasonal Stations of the Cross, and offers 1:1 spiritual visits and prayer sessions for residents seeking comfort and reassurance. One of the most profound acts of service she provides is coordinating the Anointing of the Sick for residents in their final stages of life—ensuring no one faces that moment without dignity, compassion, and spiritual support.

As shared by MTB’s Resident Restorative and Recreation Manager:

“She is not only a tremendous benefit to the volunteer team and the organization as a whole, but also a beacon of positivity. Every time I reach out, Celeste responds with warmth, readiness, and a smile—embodying the very spirit of Martha T. Berry. Her impact on the elders’ lives and our facility is both lasting and deeply appreciated.”

✨ Congratulations, Celeste, on being named MTB’s Volunteer of the Year. Your heart for service and unwavering dedication make a lasting difference in the lives of our residents and families every single day. ✨

🌟 Unsung Hero Award Honoree: Tarik Higgins 🌟

Since joining the Martha T. Berry team in April of 2018, Tarik Higgins has brought heart, positivity, and genuine care into every space he enters. Beginning his journey in environmental services, his affection for residents and infectious energy were evident from day one—bringing smiles, comfort, and encouragement to all who crossed his path.

When Tarik stepped into a front desk role, he initially worried it might pull him away from the residents he cared so deeply about. Instead, he showed that compassion isn’t limited to one role. By leading with kindness and consistency, he quickly became a trusted presence and a true example of what it means to serve with purpose.

Tarik’s impact is best reflected through the voices of his peers, seven of whom nominated him for this honor:

• “He never seems to have a bad day!”
• “Always willing to help and never complains.”
• “Provides top-notch customer service to everyone.”
• “If you’re feeling down, just talk to Tarik—he always knows what to say.”
• “A hard worker with a genuine love for people.”

Tarik never seeks recognition, which makes this award all the more meaningful. As one manager shared, “He is the face, first impression, and heart of MTB.”

✨ Congratulations, Tarik Higgins, on being named our Unsung Hero. Thank you for embodying the compassion, dedication, and humanity that define Martha T. Berry. You truly make a difference every day. ✨

Each year, the Martha T. Berry Foundation Board comes together to do one of our most meaningful traditions — serving a holiday dinner to the residents and their families at the Martha T. Berry Medical Care Facility.

It’s more than a meal.
It’s shared stories, familiar laughter, gentle moments, and the reminder that no one here is ever alone during the holidays.

We are incredibly grateful to the dedicated facility staff and volunteers who help make this evening so special, and to our residents who remind us why this work matters so deeply.

Moments like these are what the holidays — and our mission — are all about. ❤️
