In a study conducted by Muñoz-Gómez et al. (2022), the effectiveness of a craniosacral therapy protocol on various aspects of migraine patients was evaluated. The study included fifty individuals with migraine who were randomly assigned to two groups: the craniosacral therapy group (CTG) and the sham control group (SCG).
The CTG received craniosacral therapy according to a specific protocol, while the SCG received a sham treatment. The variables analyzed in the study included pain, migraine severity and frequency of episodes, functional and emotional disability, overall disability, medication intake, and self-reported perceived changes.
The results showed that after a 4-week intervention, the CTG exhibited significant improvements in pain, frequency of episodes, functional and overall disability, and medication intake compared to the SCG. The CTG also reported a significantly higher perception of change. These improvements were maintained at the 8-week follow-up evaluation.
Based on these findings, the authors concluded that the craniosacral therapy protocol used in the study is effective in alleviating pain, reducing the frequency of migraine episodes, improving functional and overall disability, and decreasing medication intake in migraine patients. Therefore, the protocol may be considered as a viable therapeutic approach for individuals with migraines.
