When is the right time for an adjustment?
If you were to ask us this question, our response would be ALL THE TIME! But, rationally speaking, we can’t all go all the time. So here are some indicators for when it’s time for a chiropractic tune up!
1. Before you go to the gym – a chiropractic adjustment loosens up your muscles and aligns your neuro-musculoskeletal system. If everything is properly in place, it will reduce the risk of an injury. An adjustment will also help relieve pain, which will make your workout a little easier.
2. When you feel a headache starting – we all know the familiar pangs at the start of a headache or migraine. If you can manage to get in for a quick adjustment, you may be able to relieve some of the neck and back tension causing your headache.
3. After sitting all day – book an appointment on your commute home and all the stress of sitting at your desk can melt away.
4. When you are in pain – this one is a given! If you wake up sore, have constant pain, or an injury that won’t heal, it’s time to make an appointment. Chiropractic is a drug free pain management option than can provide long term relief!
5. When you feel stressed – stress causes your body to tense up, which can cause muscle fatigue and throw your spine out of alignment. A chiropractic adjustment can loosen up your muscular system and release that tension.

How to avoid injuries during the holidays
During the holidays, everything is chaotic and moves so quickly. Sometimes we can be less cautious when we are rushing around trying to prep for big family gatherings. Here are some practical tips to stay safe this holiday season!
1. Be safe while decorating – Like many of our favorite holiday movies show us, MANY injuries happen while trying to decorate for the season. We don’t need you stuck hanging off the side of your house with Christmas lights wrapped around you!
2. Make time for the gym – If you’re anything like me, you indulge in quite the rich diet during the holiday season. A lot of those foods contain ingredients known to cause inflammation. (Think your sugars, flours and such.) So get up and keep yourself moving to help alleviate these symptoms!
3. Wear supportive shoes – Around this festive time of years, a lot of people attend fancy holiday gatherings. But fancy shoes are NOT our friends! Try finding a supportive, well-fitting shoe that you don’t have to regret the next day.
4. Watch out for kids – Chasing kids around is every parents and grandparents favorite holiday past time, right? Well too much chasing and lifting can lead to back injuries! So be very mindful of how you’re lifting and running around.
5. Be careful outside – We can emphasize this enough! BE CAREFUL OF THE SNOW AND ICE! Falling can lead to broken bones, strains, sprains, bruises, bumps, you name it. So take extra time to shovel and salt frequently used paths!
Follow these and you’ll be sure to have a holly jolly holiday season!

Naturally manage your headaches
We’ve all had at least one headache in our lifetime. Probably way more than one! They can be caused by so many things. Whether it be from tension, an odor, or from a work overload. Most things in our daily lives can cause them. Here are some natural ways you can help ease your headaches!
1. Reducing stress – If you’re an average human being, you’re probably plagued by stress. But it’s vital that we try to reduce it! Yoga, coloring, bike rides, reading, crocheting, anything you truly enjoy can help alleviate it. So make a cup of tea, light a pumpkin scented candle and relax.
2. Dietary mindfulness – Some foods or drinks can trigger headaches! (Who knew?) Added preservatives such an MSG can be a contributing factor.
3. Sleep – Something none of us get enough of! But doing your best to have a consistent sleep schedule and a solid 8 hours in dreamland can help.
4. Exercise and stretching – Both of these can help release tension that has built up in your joints. Work to create a balance in your muscles and stretch to relieve spasms that may contribute to headaches.
5. Posture – We’ve mentioned this a thousand times this month. But it’s just THAT important! Your posture can throw your whole body off. So be proactive and prevent those issues before they start.
Hopefully this list can give you a few ideas for some relief from those pesky headaches! If you have any more helpful tips, feel free to leave them in the comments for others!

Sports and chiropractic
Sports can be pretty intense. Your body can take a serious beating from them! Rather than fixing injuries, chiropractic can be all about preventing them.
1. It can improve hand-eye coordination. Studies have found that chiropractic can improve this level of coordination, especially if neck pain is present, by changing the interaction between the cerebellum and motor cortex.
2. One study published in the journal Trials involved 120 special-operation military personnel, individuals with extremely physical roles. After just one session, the participants receiving chiropractic care were able to complete a complex whole-body motor response task in less time. (DeVocht JW, Vining R, Smith DL, Long C, Jones T, Goertz C. Effect of chiropractic manipulative therapy on reaction time in special operations forces military personnel: a randomized controlled trial. Trials. 2019 Jan 3;20(1):5. doi: 10.1186/s13063-018-3133-2. PMID: 30606225; PMCID: PMC6318970.)
3. Faster recovery from concussions. Concussions and subsequent neck pain from them are a major problem for athletes! Chiropractic can help hasten the process.
4. Decreased healing time with other athletic related injuries. Chiropractic is vital for total body health, so this should come as no surprise!
5. It can help increase muscular function. One study found that it can reduce muscle inhibition by 7.5%! (Suter E, McMorland G, Herzog W, Bray R. Conservative lower back treatment reduces inhibition in knee-extensor muscles: a randomized controlled trial. J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 2000 Feb;23(2):76-80. PMID: 10714531.)
6. It can help decrease joint stiffness and pain!
Chiropractic is such a beneficial tool for aiding todays athletes. Give Dr. Ellenberger a call so he can he can help with your athletic endeavors.

9 Reasons to fix your posture
Did you know that your posture affects every part of your body? It’s true! That’s why we’ve been bringing posture up repeatedly in this months posts. Here are 9 VERY convincing reasons why you need to be extra wary of your posture.
1. It causes tension headaches. Leaning with your head down and neck slumped will strain your neck AND back muscles. This can lead to frustrating tension headaches.
2. It makes you tired. Slouching puts pressure on your lungs, which leads to not being able to breathe as deeply. Less oxygen = fatigue!
3. It can make your gastrointestinal reflux worse. Your stomach and organs are put under extra pressure when you lean forward. This pressure makes your digestive system very unhappy. And absolutely nothing good comes from that.
4. It causes back pain. That should be a given. It’ll force your spine out of alignment. Thankfully Dr. Ellenberger can help fix that!
5. It can lead to pinched nerves. Trust me, those are definitely not fun!
6. It can increase knee pain. When your spine is out of alignment, it puts all sorts of pressure on your other joints, especially your knees!
7. It can ruin your mood. A 2014 psychology study revealed that those with better posture have higher self-esteem, alertness, better mood and felt less fear than those who slouched. BOOM!
8. It can wreck your bite. Poor spinal alignment can misalign your jaw joints. This can lead to jaw pain, teeth issues and even TMJ. (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome.)
9. It can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Poor posture can cause blood vessel constriction leading to blood clots and vein disorders.
Hopefully this convinced you to be more wary of your posture. It has a ton to do with overall wellness!

Lions, tigers, and bad shoes… oh my!
Did you know that a lot of our alignment issues start in the feet? It’s true! Our feet are so incredibly important. They carry us around day by day, and they have a lot of sway in how our back feels. Today I thought we would address an elephant in the room. And that elephant is BAD FOOTWEAR.
For women, a lot of the times bad footwear is HEELS. Yes, those terrible, pointy, uncomfortable torture devices that women wear. There are tons of different reasons as to why. Maybe they go with your dress better than flats, maybe you want to have an extra couple inches of lift, or maybe it’s because you like the sound they make when you walk. Whatever the reason may be, we can all agree on one… THEY AREN’T GOOD FOR YOUR FEET!
In healthcare offices low back pain has been an ongoing and prevalent finding in women who wear heels! With your toes plantar-flexed, the joint function in the foot is altered, the hips shift forward and your spine has to balance out the weight by overarching backwards. All these changes start with the unnatural stresses on the foot joints, which in turn move the whole way up to the spine!
The basis of good posture is your feet. And it’s not just women’s heels that have a negative effect, a lot of men wear shoes that aren’t exactly great for their feet either. A lot of physical jobs that men perform require steel toed boots and they aren’t always the most comfortable, and they tend to be very heavy!
Make sure you’re always wearing supportive, quality footwear. If needed, throw a good pair of insoles in there to help! (They even make supports for heels!)
Ellenberger Chiropractic carries a phenomenal line of insoles that help you maintain a good posture and even weight distribution. Please stop in and we would be happy to show them to you!

Tension Intervention
We get it. Everyone has stress in their lives. Whether it’s from work, parenthood, family, or your dog won’t stop barking at the neighbors chihuahua. (Ask me how I know.) The good news is that we can help.
1. Make an appointment with Dr. Ellenberger! (Your friendly neighborhood chiropractor.) He is here to help, and he wants to help you alleviate your tension!
2. Stretching – Roll your shoulders, shake it out, dance like nobody is watching. It’ll help, we promise!
3. Use relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing. Centering yourself can really relax the body! Namaste!
4. Use a heating pad on sore shoulders and neck muscles. There is nothing like a nice heating pad after a long day.
5. Take a screen break! Peel yourself away from Face book and Instagram for a few. It’ll do you wonders!
6. Practice good posture. Make sure you’re not hunched over while you’re working on your computer, and make sure you’re not slouching while standing. It helps!
7. GET SOME SLEEP! It seems like everyone is sleep deprived these days. Our lives are so demanding! But set a reminder in the evenings and hit the hay a little earlier. You’ll feel so much better for it.
8. Eating healthy and drinking PLENTY of water. WE KNOW, we’ve mentioned water a million times. But it really does make a huge difference! (Again, iced coffee doesn’t count as your daily water intake.)
9. Get some fresh air! The weather is beautiful right now. There is a crisp fall feel and plenty of sunshine. Enjoy it! It will help your tension melt away.
Try some of these and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results!
