How Pacifier Use Impacts Oral Development 👶🍼

Pacifiers can be a helpful soothing tool — especially in infancy. But like many things in development, timing and duration matter.

When pacifier use continues beyond the early months (or is frequent and prolonged), it can influence:
• Tongue posture
• Palate shape
• Teeth alignment
• Lip strength
• Swallow patterns
• Nasal vs. mouth breathing

Constant forward pressure from a pacifier can encourage a lower tongue position and contribute to changes in how the upper jaw develops over time.

This doesn’t mean pacifiers are “bad.” It means they’re a temporary tool — not meant for long-term use. Gradual weaning at an age-appropriate time can help support more optimal oral function and growth.

If you’re unsure whether pacifier habits are affecting your child’s development, a functional evaluation can provide clarity and guidance. 💛

Small habits in early years can shape big outcomes later.

Exercises for Strengthening Facial Muscles 💪✨

Just like the rest of the body, the muscles of the face need strength, coordination, and endurance to function well.

Targeted facial exercises can help support:
• Lip seal
• Proper tongue posture
• Clear speech
• Efficient chewing & swallowing
• Nasal breathing

When facial muscles are weak or imbalanced, we often see mouth breathing, lip strain, jaw tension, or difficulty maintaining proper oral posture. Strengthening the right muscles — the right way — helps create better stability and long-term function.

It’s not about random movements or “face yoga.” It’s about intentional, functional exercises that support how the mouth was designed to work.

Small daily habits can create big changes over time. 💛

Early Signs of Oral Dysfunction in Children 👶👄

Sometimes the earliest clues are the quiet ones. Oral dysfunction doesn’t always look dramatic — but small signs in childhood can impact breathing, speech, sleep, and jaw development over time.

Here are a few early red flags to watch for:
• Open-mouth posture
• Chronic mouth breathing
• Snoring or restless sleep
• Difficulty chewing or picky eating
• Speech sound challenges
• Excessive drooling past toddler years
• Tongue thrust or messy swallowing

When the tongue, lips, and jaw aren’t working in harmony, the body adapts. Over time, those adaptations can influence facial growth and overall function.

The good news? Early awareness makes a difference. Supporting proper oral posture and muscle coordination during growth can set the foundation for healthier development long term. 💛

If something feels off, trust your instincts — early support matters.

How to Find Your Ideal Tongue Rest Position 👅✨

Your tongue has a “home” — and where it rests matters more than you might think.

Your ideal tongue rest position is:
✔️ The entire tongue gently suctioned to the roof of the mouth
✔️ The tip resting just behind the top front teeth (not pushing on them)
✔️ Lips closed
✔️ Teeth lightly touching or slightly apart
✔️ Breathing through your nose

If your tongue rests low in the mouth or presses against your teeth, it can contribute to mouth breathing, jaw tension, and changes in dental alignment over time.

Try this:
Place the tip of your tongue on the small ridge right behind your top front teeth, then gently lift the rest of your tongue up to the palate. Close your lips and breathe through your nose. That’s your starting point.

It may feel new at first — especially if your muscles aren’t used to it. But with consistency, proper tongue posture can become your natural resting pattern. 💛

Function shapes form.

Facial Muscle Balance & Harmony ✨

Our faces are designed to work in balance. When the muscles of the lips, cheeks, and tongue are functioning in harmony, everything from breathing to chewing to speech becomes more efficient.

But when certain muscles are overworking — or underworking — it can show up as:
• Lip strain or open-mouth posture
• Jaw tension or clenching
• Facial asymmetry
• Mouth breathing
• Difficulty with clear speech

Muscles follow patterns. If the tongue rests low, the lips may overcompensate. If nasal breathing is limited, other muscles jump in to help. Over time, these patterns can influence growth, comfort, and overall facial development.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s balance. When we support proper oral posture and muscle coordination, we help the face function the way it was designed to. 💛

How the Tongue Affects Teeth Alignment 👅🦷

Your tongue isn’t just for eating and talking — it plays a powerful role in how teeth line up over time.

When the tongue rests up on the palate, it helps gently shape the upper jaw and support proper spacing for teeth. Think of it as a natural orthodontic guide during growth.

But when the tongue rests low, pushes forward, or presses against the teeth, it can contribute to:
• Crowding
• Gaps
• Open bite
• Relapse after orthodontics
• Ongoing mouth breathing

Teeth don’t move “randomly” — they respond to the forces around them. And the tongue is one of the strongest muscles in the mouth.

Addressing tongue posture and function alongside orthodontic care can help create more stable, long-term results.

Alignment isn’t just about braces — it’s about function. 💛

I’m an artist… but my canvas is the face.

Through myofunctional coaching, I help retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face so breathing, swallowing, and oral posture work the way they were designed to.

When function improves, change happens.
These results are more than cosmetic—they’re functional transformation.

Same face. Better function.

Tongue Posture & Jaw Growth in Children 👅✨

Did you know your child’s tongue posture can influence how their jaw grows?

When the tongue rests up on the roof of the mouth, it gently supports proper upper jaw development. This helps create space for teeth, supports nasal breathing, and encourages balanced facial growth.

But when the tongue rests low in the mouth, it can contribute to:
• Narrow palate
• Crowded teeth
• Mouth breathing
• Forward head posture

In growing children, small habits make a big impact. Early awareness of tongue posture can support healthy development and may even reduce the need for more complex interventions later.

If you’ve noticed open-mouth posture, snoring, or difficulty chewing, it may be worth looking at oral function more closely.

Growth is happening every day — let’s make sure it’s supported the right way. 💛

Clear speech starts with the tongue. 👅

If the tongue can’t lift, move, or stabilize properly, speech sounds may come out distorted or unclear.

Strength + mobility matter.
Function matters.

When we improve tongue function, we improve speech clarity.

👅 Signs of Tongue Weakness

The tongue is one of the most important muscles for breathing, feeding, swallowing, and sleep — but when it’s weak or lacks endurance, the body starts to compensate.

And those compensations can show up in ways you might not immediately connect to the tongue.

Here are some common signs we look for:

⚠️ Mouth breathing
⚠️ Low tongue posture (resting on the floor of the mouth)
⚠️ Messy or inefficient chewing
⚠️ Swallowing with lip or chin tension
⚠️ Food pocketing
⚠️ Speech sound difficulties
⚠️ Fatigue while eating or feeding
⚠️ Poor sleep or snoring

For little ones, this might look like long feeds, clicking while nursing, or trouble coordinating sucking and swallowing.

For older kids and adults, it may show up as tension, clenching, or airway and sleep concerns.

The good news?
Just like any muscle, the tongue can be strengthened and retrained with targeted myofunctional coaching.

Stronger tongue → better breathing → better function → better rest. 💛

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it may be worth taking a closer look at oral function.

⭐️ Client results speak louder than anything we could say. We’re honored to support families on their journey and grateful for the trust they place in us. Here’s a recent review we’re proud to share:

“Couldn’t recommend BreatheWell enough! My son saw Chelsea when he was just 28 months old. He had developed a cross bite after his teeth erupted in an unusual pattern between 12-18 months of age. Chelsea’s step wise approach and guidance helped us resolve his functional shift and cross bite after he turned 3 (36 months). His smile looks so much better! I am seeing the center of his upper and lower teeth get closer as he grows!” - Alexander
