They feel similar, but the treatment is different. Here's how to spot strep throat before it gets serious.

🦠 Sore Throat (pharyngitis):
▸Caused by viruses, allergies, or irritants.
▸Symptoms: Scratchy/itchy throat, congestion, runny nose, cough, mild fever, sometimes swollen glands.
▸Often improves on its own.

🚩 Strep Throat (bacterial infection):
▸Caused by Group A Strep – requires medical attention.
▸Symptoms: Sudden, severe throat pain, high fever, red/swollen tonsils (often with white patches), swollen neck glands.
▸Key difference: Typically, no cough, congestion, or runny nose.

Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu, the daughter of Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and herself a leading advocate in the global fight for human rights, spoke at Northwell's 56th annual Memorial of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In a message delivered to a packed house at North Shore University Hospital and livestreamed throughout the health system, Rev. Tutu encouraged the audience of physicians, nurses, and health leaders to ensure that patients are seen for who they are and not merely for what they need.

Recently, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced updated cervical cancer screening guidelines that include a new option for women to self-collect samples for screening.

"Initially, it was a test you could do in the office. The provider could give it to you to self-administer, but now it's been approved to do it at home. You can self administer yourself, in the comfort of your own home, and then submit it to the lab so they test for HPV," says Gizelka David-West, MD, director of gynecologic oncology for Northwell Health's Westchester region.

"I'm hopeful that this test will then be offered to patients with Medicaid, or financial support for the uninsured, because that's really where we're seeing the highest rate of cervix precancer and cancer," David-West adds.

In honor of the season of giving, we’re excited to highlight our President Junior Leadership Council volunteers, who recently distributed free copies of a children’s book they created about the importance of sleep.

This story (which features the main character "PJ") emerged from their own teen-aged experiences — juggling exam stress and daily pressures, and discovering firsthand how essential a good night’s sleep can be.

By sharing this book with 3rd and 4th graders, the Council hopes to inspire healthy sleep habits that support not only their current well-being, but their future success.
