Proud to celebrate Cohen Children's Medical Centeras the first hospital in the U.S. to earn the Autism Friendly Designation from Autism Speaks — a meaningful step forward in inclusive pediatric care. 🧩

First in the country, and raising the bar for inclusive pediatric care. 🧩

Cohen Children’s Medical Center has been named the first hospital in the U.S. to receive the Autism Friendly Designation from Autism Speaks — a recognition of its deep commitment to supporting children with autism and their families.

At the heart of this achievement is the BEE Mindful program, where more than 80% of staff are specially trained to understand sensory sensitivities, adapt communication, and create a more comfortable care experience. From sensory-friendly tools to thoughtfully designed spaces, every detail helps reduce anxiety and build trust.

This Autism Awareness Month, we’re proud to celebrate a team that’s not just delivering care, but transforming it.

As we wrap up Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight Mihaela’s story — an Armonk native and a powerful reminder that there’s no such thing as “too young” for colore**al cancer.

Diagnosed at just 45 with Stage IIA re**al cancer, Mihaela’s experience reflects a troubling national rise in cases among those under 50 — even among otherwise healthy individuals with no family history. Her case was especially complex, as a childhood VP shunt placed her at risk for a life-threatening brain infection during abdominal surgery.

Thanks to the precision of robotic surgery, our very own Dr. Alexis Grucela successfully removed the tumor while carefully navigating these risks — allowing Mihaela to return home just one day after surgery.

Stories like Mihaela’s underscore the importance of early screening, awareness, and trusting your body when something feels off.

Colore**al cancer rates in women are on the rise, which makes screening more important than ever.

Getting a colonoscopy can prevent cancer before it develops. Many people put it off because they are unsure what to expect, especially the prep. 🚽

Curious what it's really like? Elisa DiStefano takes us behind the scenes of her first colonoscopy with Leonard Stein, MD, medical director, Digestive Health Center of Excellence in Uniondale & Long Island Center for Digestive Health, showing everything from prep to procedure.

Some describe the pain from a heart attack like an elephant sitting on their chest. But for 38-year-old Kelli Mackiewicz, it felt distinctly like "an elephant sitting on my back."

Here at Northern Westchester Hospital, Kelli underwent an urgent heart procedure that revealed a far more dangerous, often missed diagnosis: spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), a spontaneous tear in a coronary artery. Kelli had experienced a heart attack.

Kelli Mackiewicz described the pain from her heart attack like an elephant sitting on her back -- not her chest -- an atypical symptom more common in women, including those experiencing spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD).
