Public Policy Update: New HCPCS Codes Coming January 1, 2026

CMS is introducing new billing codes for hydrophilic catheters. This is a coding update, not a coverage change, but it does require action to protect your clinical decisions and your patients’ continuity of care.

What WOC Nurses Should Do:
🔹New prescriptions: Write “hydrophilic” or brand/item number & exclude HCPCS codes
🔹Renewal prescriptions: Carefully review renewal forms from suppliers to ensure “hydrophilic” or brand name/item number is noted & remove old codes
🔹Timing: Start updating now to avoid delays in 2026

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare in the U.S., yet the Department of Education may use 1960s-era definitions of "professional" and "graduate" degrees to determine loan limits, leading to the further erosion of the nursing workforce.

This move stems from an effort to rein in student loan debt and tuition costs as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act; however, it means that post-baccalaureate nursing students would only be eligible for half the amount of federal loans as graduate medical students.
